My wife's great uncle Alec Kelly, who was killed at 3rd Battle of the Scarfe 9th May 1917, buried at Level Crossing Cemetery, Fampoux, sent this photo to his sister, my wife's grandmother. He was with Royal Warwicks, 9th Battalion, 13th Division, and was involved in the Gallipoli campaign. I read that after Gallipoli some of this regiment went on further operations to Egypt and Palestine. I am trying to find out where this group of soldiers could be, as some of them are holding 'pith' helmets. Could this be in Egypt? or Palestine. I don't know whether Alec Kelly went to either of these places to fight but I do know that he ended up with the 1st Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment in France before his death there. I cannot find any service records for him, assume were burnt. His service number was 3564. Can anybody recognise anything to do with this photo? Many thanks

Many of the units which went to Gallipoli were sent to Egypt first, and from there to Gallipoli, and many staged back to France by way of Egypt so this photo could be of him en route rather than stationed there. Sorry, other than the Wolesley helmet there is no clue as to where it was taken, as far as I can see.

The LLT page states the 13th Division sailed from England to Alexandria, to Mudros, to Gallipoli and then back to Port Said, then Mesopotamia where it stayed for the rest of the war. This photo could have been taken at pretty much any point of that journey.

I see he was KIA serving with the 1st Bn. He may have been previously wounded either at Galipoli or Mespotamia with the 9th Bn. I will check later and return, unless Alan Tucker beats me to it !!! lol

Hello again Silver Fox

I was going to put some more info on.... then I saw your profile...Aston Villa!!!!!

Just to show that Blue noses aint that bad. Alec Kelly's name and number was listed in the casualty lists of the B'ham Daily Post on 24 September 1915. I do not know how long it took for casualty reports to reach the UK from Galipoli, but the 9th Warwicks were involved in a major attack and took very heavy casualties on 9/10 August 1915 at Koja Chemen.

Forum member Kevan Darby is the expert on the 9th Warwicks. He may help with further info

,Hi Terry Thanks a lot for your information Alec we only recently found out had gone first to Gallipoli and was badly wounded while with the 9th btn and at some time was transferred to the 1st btn in France where he was killed. We are trying to find more information about his time in Gallipoli but not much luck yet. As far as the Villa go I do wish Blues were in the Premiership with us. Thanks. Mike

over the weekend I will sort out the 9th RWR copy of War Diary for the period. The 9th left Avonmouth on 17 June 1915. Reaching Mudros on the island of Lemnos on 9 July. Four days later they landed on V Beach near Cape Helles.

I would say the picture was taken at Mudros

Thank you so much Terry that's explained a lot now. Very good of you to take the time. My wife has read this with great interest about her g uncle as it never passed down through the family that he was badly wounded in the Gallipoli sphere but that he had even gone there! As I say thanks. Mike
