HERITAGE PLUS Posted 21 July , 2013 Posted 21 July , 2013 I have a reference to a Labour Corps man being at Belak, Egypt. I am not sure whether this is the correct spelling. Grateful for a location identification, please. Thanks Dave
rmcguirk Posted 21 July , 2013 Posted 21 July , 2013 Dave, Not a lot to go on, but could be Bulaq in central Cairo, on the east bank of the Nile. Russell
HERITAGE PLUS Posted 21 July , 2013 Author Posted 21 July , 2013 Thanks Russell. I see the old spelling of Bulaq was Bulak so a possibility. Dave
ianhwason Posted 21 July , 2013 Posted 21 July , 2013 (edited) Dave, There is a reference to Belak here which says it is a fortified island 4 miles from Assuan/Aswan.??????????? http://books.google....k egypt&f=false Ian. Edited 21 July , 2013 by ianhwatson
Charpoi Warrior Posted 22 July , 2013 Posted 22 July , 2013 Unless there was a barracks or base at Bulak would a district of Cairo be named rather than just "Cairo"? Aswan is a possibility. Sorry, I can't offer any better suggestions.
ianhwason Posted 22 July , 2013 Posted 22 July , 2013 The islands off Aswan do have a bit of British military history - Lord Kitchner island - that or another used by him as an ammunition store in 1888 I believe (relief of Khartoum). Belak flooded when lake Nasser was formed? Ian
