aradgick Posted 20 July , 2013 Posted 20 July , 2013 Bandsman Henry Hollingsworth, 5663, 1/Royal Berkshire Regiment SDGW gives DOW 27.8.14, but CWGC gives date of death as 29.8.18!! It also states he is buried in Chauny Communal Cemetery British Extension in Joint Grave 4. B. 32-33. The other occupant of this grave is Harry Knight, 12th Lancers, died 28.8.14 (also DOW). Why would two men, from different units, be buried in a joint grave? And why is thee a discrepancy of over four years for Hollingsworth's date of death (or just a VERY bad typo)? Andrewr
ss002d6252 Posted 20 July , 2013 Posted 20 July , 2013 And why is thee a discrepancy of over four years for Hollingsworth's date of death (or just a VERY bad typo)? Usually its because an error (often just a scanning error) occurred when the records were digitised - if you contact the CWGC they will usually check the original registers and correct any mistakes. Why would two men, from different units, be buried in a joint grave? They were probably re-interned after the war and buried together - many CWGC graves are single graves. The cemetery information states "The Extension was made after the Armistice for the burial of remains brought in from the battlefields of the Aisne and from the following smaller cemeteries in the surrounding countryside:-" http://www.cwgc.org/find-a-cemetery/cemetery/34400/CHAUNY%20COMMUNAL%20CEMETERY%20BRITISH%20EXTENSION Craig
purley Posted 20 July , 2013 Posted 20 July , 2013 Andrew the regimental records say presumed dead on or since 27/8/14 - they didn't bury men by regiment but usually dug a long trench placed the bodies in it and erected headfstones roughly where the body was - if they had a lot of men to bury they needed to put two or even three names on a headstone John
aradgick Posted 21 July , 2013 Author Posted 21 July , 2013 Thanks guys. As the death registration for Henry is 1914, and the other man in the grave died in 1914 (the day after him), I had assumed 1914 was the correct year. I have sent an e-mail to CWGC asking them to check, and amend their records if necessary Andrewr
