I am trying to find details on a soldier who served in the Liverpool Regiment. Harry Gloyne 85267 previously Royal Welch 13535. He was KIA on Oct 10th and is buried in Montay Cemetery near Le Cateau. According to the cemetery details most of the men buried there were between the 19th Oct and 6th November 1918. I can see that the 9th Battalion Liverpool were South West of Cambrai so if he was killed in an action on or around the 10th October with the 9th would it be reasonable to assume that he was buried some 30km south west at Montay. I can find no other possible Liverpools fighting in that area at that time. I would like to try to pin down his unit to associate him with a War Diary. I can see that the Diary for the 9th at that time has been transcribed on the 9th Kings web site. If he was not in the 9th and is recorded as KIA in The Liverpool Regiment and buried in Montay are there any other possibilities please.

If anyone has any suggestions as to where else I might look for details I would be glad of the help. I have looked extensively at all the information on the Forum but other than this 9th Battalion I am stuck for ideas. Colin

I'm not sure if I'm missing some thing here but Harry Gloyne and 3 others of the 18th Battalion of The King's (Liverpool Regiment) died on the 10th October 1918, the day that Montay was reached by allied troops. LLT shows the battalion as part of 199th (Manchester Brigade) 66th (2nd East Lancashire) Division who took part in the "Pursuit to the Selle" 9 -12 October.

Definitely not 9th Battalion. They were out of the line at rest on 10th October, at Anneux.

CWGC has him as 18th Bn.

Thank you Ken and Ken. I first elected for The Pursuit to Selle after looking at Captain E A James A record of Battles and Engagements and I had seen the LLT had them with the 66th. I seem to not have seen the Battalion reference in CWGC and since reading your replies I have looked again but I still can't see that mention can you please point me to it Ken, am I seeing an incomplete version ? Yes the 9th were at rest I could see that in the diary but I have found men before reported killed on a particular day my own uncle in fact when his unit was not fighting so I was worried about jumping to the wrong conclusion without all the evidence that you have now kindly supplied. As my neighbour and I are off to see where his Gloynes were killed its comforting thanks to your help we are going to be in the right place. Greatly appreciated Colin
