A long shot I know but........

I'm researching an ASC man and have his service records. Some parts are impossible to read and I can't find any details of which MT Coy he was in (his civilian occupation was bus driver with the London General Omnibus Company). His discharge papers (1915) show 52 MT Coy but I understand this was a Base Depot Coy and never left the UK.

The only clue to his MT Coy is that he sailed to France on 11 August 1914 from Liverpool (possibly on RMS Arabia/Arabic). Any suggestions greatfully received.

Mark,

Have you thought about consulting the Embarkation records at Kew under WO25. By checking the units leaving the UK on 11 August 1914 from Liverpool, it would narrow down the possibilities if not give you the answer.

Just a thought

Ian

Thanks, Ian. I'll give it a go next time I'm there. Quite why I didn't think of it myself is beyond me. Maybe it's my age :(

At that date, his MT Coy must have been part of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th or Cavalry Division or possibly I or II Corps of BEF HQ, so that narrows it down a bit.

59 MT Coy was part of 1st Division Supply Column

61 MT Coy was part of 2nd Division Supply Column

63 and 64 MT Coys were with 3rd Division, the latter as an Ammunition Sub-Park

48 and 49 MT Coys were with 5th Division, the latter as an Ammunition Sub-Park

58 MT and 45 Coys were with Cavalry Division, the latter as an Ammunition Park

53 MT Coy was 1st Base Depot Coy attached to GHQ BEF

54 MT Coy was 1st Advanced depot, attached to GHQ BEF

Chris - Thanks for narrowing it down. Looks like another visit to the PRO/NA.
