Mat McLachlan Posted 6 October , 2004 Share Posted 6 October , 2004 I believe this to be a photo of Currie, in Pith Helmet, instructing some other Colonials in the fine art of Jamtin Bomberry. Nice of him to drop off in Gallipoli for their edification. Pat, Just read this entire thread and thought your quip about Currie and the jam tins was a cracker. I didn't know you were funny... Guest bonza Posted 6 October , 2004 Share Posted 6 October , 2004 I didn't know you were funny... Hope you don't use the same Dictionary me darlun missus quotes from. A friendly word of advice, though. Don't go stirring up the Canadians any more. I just checked Terry's Photo in the Gallery. He's got this huge Mate who is a padre. He's certainly put the fear of God into me. I've suddenly realised how good the Canadians are. Just look at the Railways they built across & around the Rockies. Truce Terry? Terry Posted 6 October , 2004 Author Share Posted 6 October , 2004 Hi bonza, Who would have thought this thread would still be popping up after all these entries! And yes, I do feel like a tiny lad standing next to the padre! It has been an interesting thread, and like many on this wonderful forum, it takes such twists and turns. My original question was pretty straight forward - did LG have plans do promote Currie and MOnash to lead the BEF? I think that after all is said and done, the answer probably is that she recognised the talent and ability of these two men but would not have moved them into such a position - too many obstacles, from both within and outside the army. One thing we know for sure, bonza - you Aussies sure kick our butts at the Olympics every four years!! Cheers from Canada (that's the big cold colony at the top of the map). Guest bonza Posted 6 October , 2004 Share Posted 6 October , 2004 G'day Terry. Yep a few twists & turns in this one all right. Your mob can feel pretty secure about the ice hockey though. The only Aussie team I know of is based in Darwin. On the first day of Winter each year they take all their gear down to the beach for the Season's Opening Ceremony. They throw the puck into the water, if it sinks they know the weather is not cold enough yet. So they have a barbie, a quiet ale & make plans for next year. They have lost a few pucks but have the unique record of having never lost a game. ooRoo Give my regards to His Reverence. Pat PS Why wait 4 years for the Olympics. Come on Down to Melbourne for the Commonwealth [Not Dominion] Games in

duckman Posted 7 October , 2004 Share Posted 7 October , 2004 At risk of bringing this thread back on topic, one thing that I have not seen mentioned is the political issues. "Haig's Command: A Reassessment" (I think, will check) makes reference to Billy Hughes in this regard. His inability to shut his mouth cost him a place on the Supreme War Council (damn, is that the right term? don't have ANY of my references handy). Smuts was appointed to the place in question. With Hughes on the Council, Monash might have been a chance of being appointed. Without Hughes' whiny voice to speak for him, I don't think there was any realistic chance of a recently promoted Corps Commander (April 1918) being given command of the B.E.F. Just my 2 cents
Guest bonza Posted 7 October , 2004 Share Posted 7 October , 2004 Well! If Wilson had been able to shut Hughes up, Canada & Australia would not have got a say at Versailles. What would have happened to us all then? Pat
duckman Posted 8 October , 2004 Share Posted 8 October , 2004 Well! If Wilson had been able to shut Hughes up, Canada & Australia would not have got a say at Versailles. What would have happened to us all then? Pat I assume you are talking Woodrow the Wonder Dog*? Either way, that point is nugatory, Pat. Nobody could shut Hughes up. In this context bad. In the Versailles context good. After all, who else would have had the chutzpah to tell the sainted Wilson what to do with his condescension? But following the thought, who would have been plumping for Currie anyway? In hindsight he certainly looks a sound choice, but again, we are talking about someone with very limited experience at Corps level. Borden had clout in Whitehall, sure, but who else? cheers Ducks *Whatever happened to Simon Townsend anyway? Actually, don't tell me. This photo looks like early "Neighbours" on acid. That's how I want to remember them
Guest bonza Posted 8 October , 2004 Share Posted 8 October , 2004 At risk of bringing this thread back on topic, Some Risk! thanks for the Nostalgia Page, bout all that's left these days, and have added it to "Favourites". Didn't know Pauline Hansen was around back then.[in pic behind Woody] Nugatory, Good one, have made a note & might try to slip it into a discussion some day. Guest bonza Posted 12 October , 2004 Share Posted 12 October , 2004 Well you don't have to read on, But, After some 60 years of familiarity with the State Library in Melbourne, including several years in buildings overlooking the site, today I visited a reading room to "Learn a little today". At the entrance was a brass plaque which included State Library Dome..... with structual design by John Monash using the patented Monier Reinforcing System.... On completion in 1911 it wasthe largest such dome in the world, and was world acclaimed. Pat
michaeldr Posted 12 October , 2004 Share Posted 12 October , 2004 Well you don't have to read on, But, Have a look at this site http://home.vicnet.net.au/~aholgate/jm/jm_intro.html and in particular at the pages on JM’s engineering career pre 1914 And JM’s projects All good stuff, Including, if I have read it correctly, it looks like while the dome was his design, he couldn’t get past the contractors mafia to be allowed to build it himself Regards Michael D.R.
