Remembered Today:

2nd Life Guards January 1916

One of the soldiers that I am researching, Trooper Frank Jackson of 2nd Life Guards died of wounds in a Calais hospital on 2nd February 1916. The Household Cavalry were kind enough to send me his service record but unfortunately there are no details of where the battalion was stationed in this period. All of my reference books which mention 3rd Cavalry Division simply miss out 1916 altogether.

3rd Cavalry Division were serving in the Hohenzollern Redoubt/Quarries sector during this period in a dismounted role. Each of the regiments of the three brigades contributed a composite battalion of three squadrons, one from each regiment. There is some information about this period, from the perspective of the 1st (Royal) Dragoons who were with 6th Cavalry Brigade, in the Bickersteth Diaries that were published by Leo Cooper a few years back. Burgon Bickersteth was also the author of the 6th Cavalry Brigade History after the war.

Andrew,

Thanks for the information. I am trying to ascertain exactly where a few of the boys on our roll of honour were killed or were serving when wounded for a memorial plaque which will be displayed in St. George's Church in Ieper.

Glad to have been of some help. If I remember rightly there is a squadron standard of the 2nd Life Guards laid up at St Georges in Ieper. It was found in the attic space of the old Combemere Barracks at Windsor when it was being demolished in the 1960's and was placed there as a tribute to men of the three Household Cavalry regiments that served in the Salient in 1914/15 and with the Household Battalion in 1917.

And I think a plaque there states that it was used at a coronation; can't remember if it was George V or George VI...i think V.

We are approaching the centenary of Jackson's death and I would be interested if anyone has further details of 2nd Life Guards' activities at the time when he was killed.
