simon2 Posted 2 June , 2013 Share Posted 2 June , 2013 There is a MIC for a Edwin H Whitley, Army Service Corps, No. M2/187055 at the NA or Ancestry. His M2/ prefix suggests an electrician (I think) Link: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=D5859871 I cannot access Ancestry but it's a start. GraemeClarke Posted 2 June , 2013 Share Posted 2 June , 2013 Hi Not that it helps your quest much, but his pre war service papers are on FMP. There is an MIC for 'Edwin H. Whitley' who served in the A.S.C. as an Acting Sergeant with regimental number M2/187055, however I cannot say if it is him or not, Regards, Graeme Simon can type quicker than me !!!!! Stebie9173 Posted 2 June , 2013 Share Posted 2 June , 2013 There seems to be only one Edwin Henry Whitley, born at Peckham in late 1879 and married to Jane Ann Fisher at St Peters, Vauxhall on 3-1-1907. In 1911 they appear on the 1911 Census at Grange Cottages, Rothwell Road, Kettering, Northamptonshire. He died at the same address on 18-10-1953, probate being to his widow, Jane Ann Whitley. I can find no trace of him on the Kettering Roll of men who served, nor on the 1918 Absent Voters List at the above address. At the moment, I would conclude that he didn't serve in the war. Having said the above, there doesn't appear to be a different candidate in Birth Registers or Censuses for M2/187055 Edwin H Whitley, so I wouldn't rule that one out entirely! Edwin was a chaffeur in 1907 and 1911 so the Motor Transport section of the Army Service Corps actually fits very well. Steve.

Admin spof Posted 2 June , 2013 Admin Share Posted 2 June , 2013 His M2/ prefix suggests an electrician (I think) Simon It is for Mechanicla Transport so possibly a mechanic or lorry driver etc.
Stebie9173 Posted 2 June , 2013 Share Posted 2 June , 2013 Or a chaffeur.... Steve.
private78245 Posted 2 June , 2013 Author Share Posted 2 June , 2013 Hi, Graeme what is FMP
Stebie9173 Posted 2 June , 2013 Share Posted 2 June , 2013 FindMyPast which holds pre-WW1 service records. Your first post above suggests you already have that information. For comparison, the m,an with the next number to the Edwin H Whitley in the Army Service Corps was M2/187054 Charles William Thomas who was a chaffeur prior to enlisting as a volunteer under the Derby Scheme in December 1915 and was mobilised and posted to the A.S.C. on 8-6-1916. This man later served overseas with an Auxiliary Omnibus Company and later for a GHQ Company. This A.S.C. does seem a "good fit" for your Edwin Henry Whitley, and without the "non-evidence" of the Roll of Honour and the Absent Voters List, I would probably be saying this man is very likely him! simon2 Posted 2 June , 2013 Share Posted 2 June , 2013 Simon can type quicker than me !!!!! Graeme just luck, my fingers are generally not that quick as my brain takes longer to tell them these days. Simon, i see that you have interest in RMLI, My father served in Gallipoli Ply.16991 My GGF also served in Gallipoli PLY16385. He enlisted in Sep 1913 so your father I would assume later that year or early to mid 1914. Did he serve on ship or as infantry? Simon.
Stebie9173 Posted 2 June , 2013 Share Posted 2 June , 2013 Aha! "Reversed the polarity" and found him. Instead of being at Rothwell Road, Kettering on the Absent Voters List, he is shown at Kettering Road in Rothwell, listed as ........ Whitley, Edwin Henry, Grange Cottages, Kettering Road, Rothwell, No. 187055 A.S.C. M.T. So that is him.... (assuming the addresses information is correct). Steve. private78245 Posted 2 June , 2013 Author Share Posted 2 June , 2013 Graeme, that is the man , is there anything else i can find out about the man? Many Thanks. Simon, My father fought on Gallipoli, he was wounded by way of a bayonet wound, in the backside would you believe. ( I saw the scar ) I have never been able to find out about the wound by way of records and such. He transferred to ship in 1917. I have his records from the fleet air arm museum, attestations etc. Dave
simon2 Posted 2 June , 2013 Share Posted 2 June , 2013 Hi Dave, My GGF was also wounded on Gallipoli and MIA (I have the telegram sent to my GGM) for 2 days (this I cannot confirm, word of mouth through family). How he was wounded I don't know. Luckily though I have his original service record, his medals 1914star/clasp,BWM,VM,1937 Coronation medal, photos and have got all his attestation/conduct papers from FAAM but nothing about his medical record. The only time he was wounded and I can confirm it by his service record is the GSW he received on 22nd Mar 1918 which sent him back to Blighty. Simon.
