Collingwood Battalion

Does anyone have access to the embarkation roll for the Collingwood Battalion. Work on the Ashington War Memorial shows that seven local lads serving with 1st Platoon D Company were killed on 4 June 1915. Their service numbers ranged from Z/1542 to Z/1930. I suspect their were others from Ashington who were also part of the Collingwoods. Best wishes Draperju

The Collingwood Battalion "history" has a full roll including full address. I can't copy it because of the nature of the book and its size but I'll go through and list those with an Ashington address

The following are the men listed in the Collingwood Roll. The history was published before the end of the war so some are shown as still alive at the time of publication.

A Co

Ernest LUCAS TZ/578 211/2 (21 and a half) Beatrice St . Hirst, Ashington 2 Platoon

John HINDMARSH TZ/577 82 Woodhorn Rd. Ashington 4 Platoon

B Co

John FORD TZ/783 64 Beatrice St. Hirst, Ashington 3 Platoon

J BURN TZ/731 99 Castle Terrace, Hirst, Ashington 3 Platoon

C Co

W SMITH TZ/851 28 Long Row, Ashington 1 Platoon

Frank SHILLAN TZ/2354 120 Woodhorn Rd. Ashington 3 Platoon

Robert FORD TZ/2276 161 Maple St. Hirst, Ashington 3 Platoon

D Co

John FAWCETT TZ/1911 107 Portia St. Hirst, Ashington 1 Platoon

Richard C MARSHALL TZ/1791 541/2(54 and a half) Castle Terrace, Hirst, Ashington 1 Platoon

David PATTERSON TZ/1772 30 Port St. Hirst, Ashington 1 Platoon

John J SOULSBY TZ/1786 42 Port St. Hirst, Ashington 1 Platoon

Robert FORD TZ/1542 64 Beatrice St. Hirst, Ashington 1 Platoon

Robert J M HADDON TZ/1783 41 Beatrice St. Hirst, Ashington 1 Platoon

Wilfred TIPPER TZ/1922 73 Juliet St. Hirst, Ashington 1 Platoon

Thomas GILLIES TZ/2352 60 Rosalind St. Hirst, Ashington 3 Platoon

W BONNER TZ/1771 1 Ariel St. Ashington 4 Platoon

Following joined just prior to embarkation and no Co or Platoon given

W LAWRENCE TZ/340 11 Sixth Row, Ashington

Seems COLLINGWOOD didn't number platoons 1 - 16 and the addresses containing "and a half" (0.5 in modern parlance) probably refers to a house with separate upstairs and downstairs flats

I've just noticed that TZ/1930 doesn't appear in this list. Have you got a name?

Hope the above is useful

Thanks for that information. He does appear in the list, just that I missed him because his address is shown as Newcastle-upon-Tyne:

3 Havelock Place, Nicholson's Terrace, Forest Hall, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Could be that his birthplace shows as Ashington, which means there may be others on the list born in Ashington rather than just being resident.

That is right for 1930 Able Seaman John Thompson. His service record shows that at the time of enlisting he was living at 139 Pont Street Ashington. The Haverlock Place address is for his elder brother James. Thank you 'connaughtranger' for this information. Also to Michael Best wishes Draperju

According to the Service Records the Collingwood Battalion numbered their platoons 1-16. Thanks once again Draperju

Work on the Ashington War Memorial shows that seven local lads serving with 1st Platoon D Company were killed on 4 June 1915.

Does the War Memorial show the "1st Platoon D Co" rather than "13th Platoon D Co"? Perhaps the platoons were renumbered later to fall in line with the rest of the British Army, because Collingwood ceased to exist in June 1915?

That's right they were disbanded in June 1915. The Ashington War Memorial only shows their regimental data i.e. RND. The platoon numbers comes from their Service Records found on ancestry.com. However I have just looked at Fawcett's original record from the NA and it does not show a platoon number. It looks like you are right in the fact these were added after the event. Thanks for pointing this out. Thank you for your help Draperju

The Platoon Numbers included in the "Service History" section of the RND Roll of Honour (not "Service Records") on Ancestry are taken from from those recorded in the battalion history mentioned in post #2 ("The Collingwood Battalion, Royal Naval Division" by Lt Stanley Geary RM) and from no other source. The official 'service records' (ie ADM 339 RND Records) rarely include platoon/section numbers and often do not include company numbers either.
