EastSurrey Posted 30 May , 2013 Share Posted 30 May , 2013 My greatuncle,Private or Lance Corporal Douglas Stuart Palmer emigrated to Canada, but soon returned to enlist in the Hampshire Yeomanry in August 1914.He subsequently served in the Cavalry Machine Gun Corps. Despite various efforts I have not managed to establish anything regarding his service with the CMGC barring his service number (101977) and that he was disembodied 7.3.1919 (according to his medal roll),except that a surviving letter from Arnside Street, dated 19.1.1939, presumably based on records that were soon to be destroyed in the Blitz, gives his character as "very good". I have now discovered on line that Douglas has a Canadian record in relation to gratuities paid by the Canadian Government to those who had served in the British Imperial Forces. This is in RG9 Series 11F-10,vol. 207 File 14143-D-8. This could give details of which squadron Douglas served with in the CMGC and be the key to unlock his service.Has anyone seen any of these records and can advise on how detailed they are? Unfortunately,it appears they have not available on line, but have been microfilmed and the chances of me getting to the Canadian Archives are nil. Would anyone nearby be able to assist, please? I would be very happy to reciprocate by looking for material in our National Archives at Kew. Michael
Raypalmer Posted 2 May , 2014 Share Posted 2 May , 2014 Michael Just a thought ... I believe that some Canadian Archive records indexed on the website give the option of applying for a digitised copy - that is, you ask them for an estimate of the cost of digitising - and then if you buy you can download. By the way, I found your post in a state of great excitement, because my Great-Uncle Albert Palmer, from Cardiff, enlisted in Canada in 1917. Another coincidence, I'm afraid! Guest Posted 2 May , 2014 Share Posted 2 May , 2014 It will probably be worth posting this on the CEF Study Group Forum. They are always very knowledgeable, and helpful. Mike
