Jerrymurland Posted 29 May , 2013 Share Posted 29 May , 2013 I'm trying to pinpoint exactly where the SA Brigade were during the Marrieres Wood stand on 24 March 1918. One account tells us the brigade were behind the northern point of the wood running north east in the direction of Rancourt, a little over two miles n/w of Bouchavesnes. Shaw Sparrow says they were north of the road running from Le Forest and Rancourt - which places them about Hospital Wood. From the SA positions we are also told the ground sloped eastwards and then rose again to another ridge - which places them - to my mind - on the ridge that lies west of the valley du Bois Boitel. What is confusing is the reference to Marrieres Wood which makes the assumption that the SA fought in the wood which I now believe to be incorrect. Can anyone clear this up for me?Jerry

Steven Broomfield Posted 29 May , 2013 Share Posted 29 May , 2013 "Divisional" as in 9th Division? I have the SA Brigade in France as well, so if required I can look in there too.
Jerrymurland Posted 29 May , 2013 Author Share Posted 29 May , 2013 Steve the 9th Division History says little about the actual position of the SA Brigade but does not say at any time the brigade were in the wood. The map in the SA Brigade WD is so feint as to not be readable but the lines suggest the brigade held a position nearer Rancourt. If you could look in the SA Brigade History I would be grateful... Steven Broomfield Posted 29 May , 2013 Share Posted 29 May , 2013 Jerry - there is quite a bit (plus a map) and it seems to describe the lay of the land pretty well. I suspect you have already done so, but PM me an e-mail address and I'll photograph the relevant pages at the weekend for you.
