Hello

I'm looking for information for my Great uncle David Turner Reg.no. 2338. He started in the Royal Bucks Hussars and was transferred to the West York Reg.

5th battalion, 146th Brigade, 46th West Riding Division in 1917. What I am having trouble with is finding what Theatres he took part in. Can anyone help.

Thank you

Dave

I think you'll find it was 49 Div.

Lots of available material. They served on the Western Front to the end of the war. The only specific history that comes to mind is a booklet ISBN 0904775208 but there are a multitude of books on the West Yorks.that you can get either via Amazon, or inter library loan. Wyrall produced a 2 volume history, and Laurie Magnus a volume on Yorkshire Territorials. Both those are reprinted by Naval and Military press. Massacre on the Marne by Fraser Skirrow relates to a shorter period in the life of the 2/5 West Yorks.

Definitely read Massacre on the Marne, it's worth reading even if you don't have an interest in the WYR, a brill book!

Good evening scruffy.

I have the War Diary for the period, 1/5th West Yorkshire Regiment.

Just to add, on an examination of enlistments in the Regiment, across all battalions, their seems to be a large influx of Cavalry, their original enlistment, 1916 possibly even earlier for some.

1/5th circa 1917, Laventie, Nieuport, Poelcappelle.

Drop me a PM if you get the chance.

Chris.

Hello Chris

David Turner signed up in May 1915 with the Royal Bucks Hussars. He was sent to France (Rouen) March 1917 where in Sept he was transferred to West York Reg. Iv'e got this info from first Ancestry and then his service record but after this I'm finding it hard to decipher as I'm new to this and it can get a bit confusing, So any help is much appreciated. I'm off to Ypres tomorrow so ill no doubt pick your brains another time.
