Hi, i have recently obtained my Grandfathers Service Record,

John Mattthews, DA 11472, on the record the ships he served on, are listed, but i seem to have drawn a blank trying to get any information about them,they are;

Energy.

Ibis.

Solstice.

These are all probably Trawlers i think, Also the code TRV2, is is printed above the list of ships. would anybody know what this means?

Any help would most welcome.

Many Thanks

Kevin

Hi,Searching online for information about " Energy" one of my grandfathers ships i came across this piece of information ,ENERGY, drifter, lost with all hands, March 5, 1917, British Isles, is there anyway to find more information about this?

i have a rather unclear family photo of a ship that he served on,i would like to post it here ,but i am not sure how this is done.

Dittmar & Colledge have the following for Energy:-

Admiralty No. 2189, Port No. BF.324 [banff], built 1906, 79 tons gross, 1x6pdr AA, Net, served 6.15-1920.

Navy lists give her still in service December 1918. Commanded by Skipper RNR John Mair from 7.6.15, & Skipper William Brown RNR July 18 to December 18.

According to Tarvit's "Steam Drifters" (Unfortunately arranged in order of builder and date, so it takes a while to find things!)BF 324, Energy was built by Herd and Mackenzie of Findochty & Buckie in 1906 and scrapped in 1950.

We seem to have two hired boats called ENERGY.

HMSO "British Vessels Lost at Sea" records ENERGY lost on 5 March 1917 and David Hepper in "British Warship Losses" expands, " A recently hired [1917] Fraserburgh drifter, she was en route Lowestoft from Peterhead to be fitted out when she drove ashore in Peterhead Bay in poor weather and was wrecked." No mention of losses or Admiralty Number.

Had she not been lost she would have had to be renamed for Admiralty service because there was another ENERGY (Admiralty No.2189 - probably a Buckie drifter) already serving in the Auxiliary Patrol. She was hired in 1915 and was parented by HMS WHITE OAK (Poole) from 7/6/1915, then by DREEL CASTLE (Falmouth) from 1/7/1915 and finally by HMS SATELLITE (North Shields) from1/8/1916.

Hi Thankyou to all who have responded to this thread.

I have posted in the Gallery a photo of the drifter my grandfather served on,as you can see the number is not easy to read,if anyone can help identify the ship i would be most grateful.

Many thanks

Kevin
