nr369 Posted 20 May , 2013 Share Posted 20 May , 2013 Hi all, I'm trying to find some information on how the British Government used strategic communications to affect public opinion in Ireland during the battle of the Somme, and with what, if any, success. Could anyone point me towards books or websites that might cover this. Thank you.
Airshipped Posted 7 June , 2013 Share Posted 7 June , 2013 The Somme was/is indeed a hugely significant event in shaping public opinion in Ireland, but you'd need to look at the issue of recruitment in Ireland as a subject in its own right before looking at all the intersections and divergences. In Ulster one could probably say that the Somme gained cultural significance in the decades after the war but it'd be wrong to project that back to 1916 itself in terms of how it impacted upon recruitment policies at the time. Consider the Easter Rising of 1916 too and its impact upon recruitment communications.
