Admin ss002d6252 Posted 18 May , 2013 Admin Share Posted 18 May , 2013 On 14 July 1915 the 9th Battalion DLI were in trenches near LOCRE when a defensive mine that their mining company had been working on was exploded by the Germans. Does anyone know whereabouts this mine was ? (somewhere in sector G1) Craig
CROONAERT Posted 18 May , 2013 Share Posted 18 May , 2013 On the Kemmel to Wijtschaete road immediately west of 'Peckham' (practically on the road junction ('Peckham Corner') with the side road that would take you past the 'Peckham' mine crater of 1917 and Spanbroekmolen cemetery). Admin ss002d6252 Posted 18 May , 2013 Author Admin Share Posted 18 May , 2013 Thanks - presumably it was the same mine at 'Peckham Corner' mentioned here - http://www.gutenberg...9-h/17369-h.htm Craig
CROONAERT Posted 18 May , 2013 Share Posted 18 May , 2013 There were quite a number of mines detonated in that area in 1915 , so, without reading it thoroughly, I couldn't really say.
Admin ss002d6252 Posted 18 May , 2013 Author Admin Share Posted 18 May , 2013 Not much to go on, unfortunately. Diary for the 9th DLI Diary for the 6th DLI which mentions the incident. http://6thdurhamlightinfantry.wordpress.com/2012/08/30/14th-july-1915/ It appears the 5th L.N.L were actually holding the line at the time so I've posted for a look up of the diary if anyone has it.
