Hello Pals,

I need some help trying to find the citation for Harry Eugene Sandwell 13087 promoted 2nd LT to Border Regiment, after being in the Loyals. His MIC mentions "MM" but then another entry states can't find "MC". On Ancestry is an image of this individuals medals - I believe one on the far left is the Military Medal but I cannot find any record for him. Can someone help please?

David

His MM was published in London Gazette #29981, 12th March 1917, Page 2485.

Link to the page is here... http://www.london-ga...upplements/2485

Can't see any obvious references to the MC in the Gazette so would assume MIC is correct, i.e. No Record.

What about the evidence of the medal photo though? http://trees.ancestr...75e9?src=search

Also could you help me find the reference for the citation for another soldier?

Private Edwin Howarth, 13163, Promoted 2nd Lt. Commanded 52nd King’s Liverpool Regiment. Military Cross Winner and was gazetted 2nd December 1918:

For conspicuous gallantry and resource. He led a patrol in rear of the enemy's position and, in conjunction with a frontal assault by another party, killed several of the enemy and captured twelve prisoners and two machine guns. It was owing to his initiative that the operation was a success.”

Photo shows MM & Trio which is borne out by the London Gazette & MIC.

Howarth's MC citation was published in London Gazette #31043, 2nd December 1918, Page 14246. Link is here.... http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/31043/supplements/14246

He was gazetted out as Sandwell MM

Loyal R.4th (D.F.) Bn.—Temp. Lt. H. E. Sandwell, M.M., relinquishes his commission. 4 July 1921.

If he was cited MM that only adds further confusion!

Dave

Forgive me if I'm being dense here but why if he was cited MM would that add further confusion?

His MIC is clear enough, says MM (Military Medal) after his name which is borne out by the London Gazette entries and his medals but also states "No Record of MC" (Military Cross) which is also borne out by the London Gazette, this time by no entry. Presumably somebody enquired as to whether or not he was entitled to the MC with the answer being in the negative.

Because I can find no citation for his MM. Did they get one?

MMs were only published (Names, ranks, units and dates)during WW1. Citations (reasons for the award) were not printed in the Gazette. I've always assumed that the recipients themselves received a citation, but I've never seen one.

The previous two posters have pretty much stated the situation as I understand it. Citations for the award of the MM were issued (a few examples can be found here...http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/military_medal_GV.htm) but not published in the London Gazette.
