I recieved the lastest edition of "Stand To" in the garrison libary Bob Wyatt reviews this book, he gives it a very good write up indeed {is there a man who knows more about military books?} and thats is good enough for me!! {it details the history of the 9th service battalion Royal irish Fusiliers, and the 9th North Irish Horse1914-1919} just ordered a copy from Amazon looking forward to its arrival!

As the author I'm pleased that you are reacting to Bob's write up. I live in the USA and haven't seen my copy of 'Stand To' yet - much looking forward to it. I hope that you enjoy the book. If you see any errors let me know.

Nick, book arrived yesterday, what a labour of love, it seems to contain every concievable fact etc concerning these battalions {even the football results !!} Bob Wyatt was spot on and i would recommend the purchase of this tome to anybody who has an interest in the Irish regiments.

Interestingly you mention the "Journals of E A Godson" i have a copy of this book with annotations by him {it was a presentation to Chelsea Libary and this is the first time i have ever seen this little book mentioned by anybody}

best regards

For anyone who is interested in the 9th battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers, or the 36th Ulster Division, this is

a must have book. The author deserves the highest praise for his efforts in producing this book.

I received my copy a number of weeks ago and I have spent most of my free time both reading as well as browsing through it. I also got Nick to sign my copy a couple of weeks ago when he was over at a bit of a "Dooh" in the Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum in Armagh when he opening a new exhibition.

All I can add is that having spoken to him then, he said it really was a true labour of love, and whilst he admitted a real epic to research, the author deserves to be well and truly thanked for his superb contribution to what in my opinion is the most comprehensive history that has ever been written about a battalion of the Royal Irish Fusiliers, and indeed I would also argue probably the best written about a single battalion of any "Irish" regiment, certainly during the Great War period.

I do however have one question for him - where exactly did he get all the time for the research and the actual writing?

Regards Tommy.

PS: Nick did mention a couple of possible projects he was considering, really looking forward to his next offering!

Hello Tommy,

Sorry for the delay in replying. I wrote in my spare time but there were long periods of no work at all during operational deployments. When I left the Army I went at it full time and hey presto! I do hope to do the same for the 7th & 8th Bns but it is a bit daunting!

I just got back from holiday and have read Bob Wyatt's review - I have to say I am very flattered.

Thank you Alan. I hope that you enjoy it. If you see anything amiss please get in touch. Since publication I have released a number of updates. I decided to do that piecemeal rather than waiting until I was ready to put out a 2nd Edition. The updates can be found on the book's website here: http://www.9thirishfusiliers.co.uk/amendments-updates.html

I will upload another, important update in the next couple of weeks. One of the officers is actually two men (JBA Young and JB Young) and that will need a bit of untangling.
