Mrs. Maldon and myself have just returned from our latest expedition into Flanders and what another fantastic trip! Just a night, but full of interest. Here is how it went:

SATURDAY 11/5/13

Left Maldon at a silly time but arrived in France at 9am (local time).

Drove to De Panne for old times sake.

Went to Coxyde to put a flower on Cpl. Tindale's grave.

Coffee in Vleteren.

Went to Dozinghem to put flowers on the graves of Pte. Dallas (we have his medals) and two Maldon lads - Pte. Petchey and Pte. South.

On to St. Sixtus Abbey for lunch and two Westvleteren 12's (me!).

Ypres via Canada Farm.

Shopping and then booked in to Ariane Hotel.

Last Post at 8pm.

Meal in Cyper.

Bed.

SUNDAY 12/5/13

Up and breakfast.

Shopping in Ypres.

On to Ploegsteert Memorial to think of Rifelman Flathers (we have his medals).

Drove to Lijssenthoek and put a flower on Maldon lad, Pte. Bowtell's grave.

Went to a beer shop just outside Poperinge.

Crossing to UK.

Back in Maldon by 3pm.

Work tomorrow!

Lovely memories.

You see, this is why I wished we lived closer to Dover (other ports are available). There's no way we could just nip across for the night, it would take us that long just to get there!

Sounds like you had a brill trip.

Good to see that the beer shop got in there.

Thanks both - yes we are lucky to live so close to the crossing (and we couldn't cope without the beer!).

Best wishes.

Ahh. Ypres and Flanders are mouldering into that blue clay. Been there virtually every year since 1971. Ran into a fascinating character in Diksmuide who was a fuse collector. We found a really nice P08.

Since then looked at buying a house on Passendaele Ridge. Would be appropriate since I'm Canadian and would be with friends I never met.

Sigh.

Greetings! Am going to Hartmannswillerkopf (Vielle Armand) in Alsace on 20 June. Have been looking for trench maps for years but to no avail. Do any of you guys have n idea of where I can get some?

Completely agree Kim,

It is Only a min 3 1/2 hour drive to Dover/Folkstone for us based here in Shropshire. Glad you managed to pack so much in Maldon, just wish I could get over more often, you do not realise how fortunate you are living so close to Dover, Only M54 - M6 - M1 - M25 - M20 for us to do to get there!!.
