Post War death of soldier

I am researching Pte Thomas Mills, 19th R.I.R., regt number 19/537. He was born around Feb 1881 in Ireland, County Down. I have located his service record and he was discharged in 1917 medically unfit due to TB. He was awarded a pension since he had to support three children. His service file does not indicate his death nor is he in the CWG database. Would his pension file have an indication of his death by chance? Is this pension file kept seperately from his WWI service file? He is mentioned on our cenotaph here in Quebec as having died during WWI so I am ssuming he died of TB after the War. I have a possibility of a Thomas Mills who died in 1922 in Dublin South but looking for confirmation before I order the death record from PRO. Thanks

Presumably you've seen his Service Record on Ancestry. It gives his home address as 37 Delaware Street, Belfast. It may give other family details which could possibly help.

Danny, I know you are top notch in researching, but what connection does MIlls have to Quebec? Seems odd to me if this is your man, that he would be listed on your cenotaph.

For those without access to Ancestry, Thomas Mills' wife -Susana - was deceased by the time he enlisted. They were married in Sep 1908 in County Down. There children -all born in Quebec - were William Alexander (26/09/09), Eileen Rebecca ( 10/05/11) and Mary Isobel (23/03/13).

Danny,

There is a family tree on Ancestry incorporating the Mills family. I'll send the tree owner a link to this thread.

Done. I'll let you know if I get any response.

Yes I downloaded all the images of the service file. Not entirely sure about PRO records and want to make sure before I pay 20 euros for a death record. Thanks for the prompt replies Guys, appreciated.

Good question. He actually immigrated to Quebec and came to stay in Brownsburg, Quebec. He is in the 1911 census of Canada. His wife died in 1914 and he returned to Ireland. His three children were born in Brownsburg.

On our cenotaph, he is indicated as T. Mills. In the RG24 records listing the names of the soldiers who died in WWI from Argenteuil County, he is mistakenly listed as a Thomas Mills regt number 10672. It took me a while to figure this out and find a connection to Argenteuil. Lucky his service file survived the bombings od WW2.

Thomas Mills, died Q2/1922 Dublin south, age 42. Could be the right man.

That's the one I have and could be my man's death record. PRO might be my only option.

1915 and 1918 Belfast Street Directory lists at 37 Delaware Street, East Belfast, Co Down.

Mills T. Occupation, Settmaker

If you can hold on to Monday I will call into Belfast Library and check 1919-22 to see if he is still residing at that address, might give an idea, if he is still residing there in 1923 etc its not him. (at least that's the theory)

Hi Walter. Sure I can wait no problems. One thing though, his father was also named Thomas and was also a sett maker.

Danny, oh that's that hit in the head, plan B?

Now had a look 1911 Irish census, and another odd one, there is a D. Mills 37 Delaware Street, Belfast. A.S.C. recorded as Died on

this great site, i cant find a D. Mills A.S.C. recorded on CWGC or Ireland's Memorial records. is it possible Thomas's brother David?

Not got excess to Ancestry at moment so haven't looked at files.

I know forum member Nigel Henderson is researching these chaps on link, he might know a bit more, on less you have this all covered (or just tell me to shut up Walter, lol )

I can't see anything obvious on SDGW or on ancestry's Irish casualties.

Hi

Walter notified me about this thread.

I have David Mills recorded as an "unconfirmed" fatality (i.e. cannot find him on CWGC, IMR or SDGW) and the information I have is as follows:

Addresses - 35 in Ballygowan, Down (1901); 34 Delaware Street (1911); 37 Delaware Street (1918)

1911 census – 25yo, Insurance Agent

Parents - Thomas (Sett Maker) and Rebbecca Montgomery

1901 Census (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Ballygowan/Ballygowan/1257444/) there is a Thomas (aged 20) listed but he was not listed at the family home in 1911 Census (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Ormeau/Deleware_Street/211209/)

Strangely, the PCI Roll of Honour for McQuiston Memorial PC does not include Thomas Mills and neither does the parchment RoH or the War Memorial plaque on display in the Church (I have photos of both).

Hi Guys, just getting online now. A superb day for Mother's Day. OK I will check the Belfast newspaper as I have access to Ancestry World Wide. Plan B will be to obtain his birth and marriage records from PRO.
