Bardess Posted 4 May , 2013 Share Posted 4 May , 2013 George Thomas SPENCER died of pneumonia in Camp Mohawk, Ontario on or around 5th October 1918. He may have been an instructor. I have failed in my attempt to find anything online. TIA
pylon1357 Posted 4 May , 2013 Share Posted 4 May , 2013 Diane, I looked through all my usual places and came up empty. I can find no attestation papers, Service Records, Death Notice, or Ontario Obituary. The Circumstances of Death Records are not complete, in that the last alphabetical entry is for William Sims. The only reference I could find to Mohawk Camp is the youth camp. Sorry I am not able to help any further, or offer any further advice. CGM Posted 4 May , 2013 Share Posted 4 May , 2013 Have you got any personal details about him? Age for example? CGM
Bardess Posted 4 May , 2013 Author Share Posted 4 May , 2013 Thanks for all your efforts, Cliff He was possibly 28 when he died [born in Oldbury?] - his wife, Leonore, lived in Pennsylvania. That's all I have
Phil Evans Posted 4 May , 2013 Share Posted 4 May , 2013 Diane, How strong is the Pennsylvania connection? Is it possible that he was AEF, on attachment, or do you know for sure that he was CEF? Phil
john-g Posted 4 May , 2013 Share Posted 4 May , 2013 Strange, he is not listed on the CWGC web page or in Airmen Died? There is no AIR 76 0r AIR79, WO339 or 372? On thing you could try is to contact the RAF Museum at Hendon and see if they have a casualty card for him. best of luck Cheers John-G
David B Posted 5 May , 2013 Share Posted 5 May , 2013 Diane, I have searched ancestry.ca without any luck for your man. If he died in Canada in 1918 I thought he would have been on their list. No luck with Canadian military records either. If he was an instructor as you surmise, it is possible that he may have been a civilian. frev Posted 5 May , 2013 Share Posted 5 May , 2013 Hi Diane Does this sound like too much of a coincidence??? AIRMEN DIED: SPENCER, Rupert Cyril – Air Mechanic 1st Class 72816, 42 Wing, RAF – died 5/10/1918 Canada, of pneumonia Native of Berwick – buried at Berwick, Pennsylvania CWGC: http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/4010447/SPENCER,%20RUPERT%20CYRIL Husband of Martha Lenore SPENCER of Berwick, Pennsylavia Death recorded Hastings, Ontario, Canada The Canadian records on Ancestry will probably give you more detail (I don't have access, no doubt someone will).... Cheers, Frev
pylon1357 Posted 5 May , 2013 Share Posted 5 May , 2013 Frev, I have to agree this seems to be the man. I just came came up with Rupert Spencer as well. His wife listed as living in Penn. is bang on, and Lenore being her middle name, would also be understandable. As it is late here, I will check tomorrow morning again for anything further I can find on Rupert Spencer.
Bardess Posted 5 May , 2013 Author Share Posted 5 May , 2013 OMG, Frev, how on earth did you make the leap? You are spot on! I only knew his father was a Head Teacher and was given the wrong christian names to search for. He actually falls out of the Smethwick boundary, but... Thanks for all the other thoughts and, Cliff, would love to hear what your search finds.
pylon1357 Posted 5 May , 2013 Share Posted 5 May , 2013 Just a quick report, I am going through ancestry using my father's computer, I don't have a subscription myself. I have found his Circumstances of death record and am still looking.
Amberdog Posted 5 May , 2013 Share Posted 5 May , 2013 Christened at Oldbury, Worcester, England in 23rd Apr 1890. Son of James Harry Spencer and Alice Jane Spencer. He's age 11 on 1901 Census and still living at Oldbury. There is also a WW1 Draft Registration card for him Event Year 1917-1918 at Delaware County No. 1, birth place Oldbury, DOB 15 Feb 1890. All this information can be found free at familysearch.org.
pylon1357 Posted 5 May , 2013 Share Posted 5 May , 2013 All right, as stated above, I managed to find his Circumstances of Death Records. I also found his Death Registration from the Town of Deseronto. I have been unable to locate his marriage. As a draftsman, he made many Canada US border crossings. I am not familiar with British Military Records, so I do not know how to find his RAF records. I am sure someone here can find them. The Draft registration card mentioned above is for the US. Interesting. As I am sure you are aware, that draft card record is very very hard to read. Diane, I am going to PM you in a few minutes. I am not trying to hide anything from members, I just do not want to breech and regulations involving posting of images from Ancestry etc. I have a copy of his Death Registration, Commonwealth Circumstances of Death, and the Draft Registration card for you. This is about as far as I am able to help as the rest of the records to me are outside what I am familiar with. Cliff
pylon1357 Posted 5 May , 2013 Share Posted 5 May , 2013 OK I lied, somehow I fell into his RAF records, but they cannot be downloaded or viewed online.
