Guest nftaylorscotland Posted 3 May , 2013 Share Posted 3 May , 2013 My great grandfather, Stanley George Smith, served with the Hampshire regiment. His son's birth certificate in December 1915 lists Stanley as a private 4 Hants. The only other piece of information I have is from the Medal rolls where his regimental number is given as 201683. Is it possible to tell from the regimental number (or anything else!) if his battalion was 1/4 or 2/4 Hampshire regt? Any advice gratefully received! Marc Thompson Posted 3 May , 2013 Share Posted 3 May , 2013 The British War and Victory Medal Roll states 2/4th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. The fact that the Medal Index Card / Medal Roll only states his 6-digit TF number is an indication that he did not enter a Theatre of War until after the 1917 TF renumbering took place. Guest nftaylorscotland Posted 4 May , 2013 Share Posted 4 May , 2013 Many thanks Marc. The abstract of the roll I had seen only mentions the Regiment so that's good to know. Your information on the implication of the TF number is also very helpful indeed. Niall
