As part of a one name Study I have been researching this mans war history , and i was wondering if anyone can help me add to what I have established.

His records show enlisted in late 1910 in the 2nd Suffolk Regiment was posted to France in Feb 1915.

His DCM was gazetted on 19 Nov 1917 and he died of wounds on 19 April 1918. I have attached all the army records I can find online, two medal cards and the war memorial records from CWCG and UK soldiers died in the war...

From these records we can determine that Charles transferred to the 12th Suffolk Regt. during his time on the western front. We do not know exactly when this takes place but presumably after the 12ths landed at Le Havre on 6 June 1916 .

My queries are

  1. Is the gazetted date of 19 Nov 1917 likely to be soon after the action he gets his DCM award? ie Nov. battle for Cambrai and specifically the 12ths involvement in Bourlon Wood
  2. and if this is the case are there any detailed war diaries for the 12th Suffolks that may help with some of the engagement detail.

The war diary for 12 Suffolk is held at Kew in WO 95/2616. It hasn't been digitised yet so you'll need ot visit, hire a researcher or hope someone here hasa copy.

The DCM was awarded for actions at Gonnelieu on 25.9.17.

Please see below for the page from the regimental history of the Suffolk Regiment for a brief account of the raid. I have some of the war diary - November 1917 to March 1918 - I've had aa look and I can find no mention of him I'm afraid.

Kind regards

Colin
