Roger H Posted 25 April , 2013 Share Posted 25 April , 2013 I know nothing about medals but I feel the need to dip my toes in the water with an RFA Trio. I have seen one on eBay here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1914-18-WAR-MEDALS-GNR-H-COLLYER-R-F-A-/310657973014?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D7217065555834886886%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D310657973014%26 Might this be a good starting point? I have seen his MIC and he went to France on 5/3/1915. Any ideas which Division this Brigade might have been attached to? Roger
FZ1 Posted 25 April , 2013 Share Posted 25 April , 2013 Hi Roger, Originally 2nd Lincs Battery in the 1st NMB (North Midlands Brigade?) Territorial Force but 230th Brigade RFA on discharge. His "burnt papers" are on Ancestry. PM me your email address if you don't have access and I'll mail them to you. Before buying, can I suggest that you ask for pictures of the naming on all three medals? Cheers, Jon P.S. Finally, if you're feeling rich, you could do worse then buy a copy of Howard Williamson's The Great War Medal Collectors Companion Sixty quid, but essential for new collectors and long-time collectors alike! Roger H Posted 25 April , 2013 Author Share Posted 25 April , 2013 Jon Many thanks. I have Ancestry and I have absolutely no idea why I didn't look! Doh! Thanks for the tip about pictures of the naming Roger
Roger H Posted 25 April , 2013 Author Share Posted 25 April , 2013 Jon Papers found! I have asked for photos of the names. MIC says Herbert Collyer, service papers say Hubert but definitely the same man Roger
trenchtrotter Posted 26 April , 2013 Share Posted 26 April , 2013 Hello Roger! Tempted to join the dark side eh! The world of the collector! Beware! Seriously though a nice set of medals looked after is nice to have. A couple of points.......firstly unless to a rare unit or gallantry group renaming not common on basic trios especially Corps. Next a quick check of some catalogue s reveal RFA trios retailing at £65 so your set are a bit pricey. There is a regular medal fair at Stratford and you would have a huge choice and be able to haggle! However if this is the group for you go for it and perhaps make an offer? Roger H Posted 26 April , 2013 Author Share Posted 26 April , 2013 Thanks TT. Just had a family bereavement so things on hold at the moment. Roger
SteveMarsdin Posted 26 April , 2013 Share Posted 26 April , 2013 Hi Roger, For your first purchase you might be better buying direct from a respectable dealer like Dixons of Bridlington; https://www.dixonsmedals.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=1019441
pylon1357 Posted 26 April , 2013 Share Posted 26 April , 2013 Good luck with your journey to the 'dark side' As stated, the trio you are looking at is a little over the top in price IMO. Myself, I dislike the new ribbons. I truly hate the latest ribbon offering for the Stars. The latest weave is hard to work with and the lack of any watering effect is lost. Staffsyeoman Posted 26 April , 2013 Share Posted 26 April , 2013 As another 'darksider' - agreed, they are overpriced with no additional factors acting on them (casualty of any form, connection to significant actions). All the ribbons are horrible modern synthetic replacements, but not a killer itself. Don't worry about sliding too far; seeing my interest and my father's, over 30 years ago my mother bought a 1914-15 Trio and Plaque (coincidentally also to RFA) because she liked the plaque. £15 in 1979... He died in the flu epidemic in early 1919 serving in a demobilisation centre. So you CAN buy a one-off.
trenchtrotter Posted 27 April , 2013 Share Posted 27 April , 2013 Roger, Whilst I don't know the circs of your loss, I extend my condolences to you and your family. When the time is right give me shout and I will talk you through medals and we will get you a nice group. Regards TT
Roger H Posted 27 April , 2013 Author Share Posted 27 April , 2013 TT Many thanks. It was my 91 yr old mother who died on Thurs night/Friday morning. Sorting everything out at the moment. I will take up your offer in a couple of weeks. Thanks again Roger
