BPJermyn Posted 19 April , 2013 Share Posted 19 April , 2013 Unlike WW1 British service men there are not medal index cards for Canadians. Apologies if this has been asked and answered but what medals were Canadian service men eligible for? The reason I ask is I have seen Victory and Service medals awarded to Canadians and today I have come across a British 1914-15 Star Medal awarded to a fallen Canadian. So if anyone could answer my question or refer me to documentation that I cannot find it would be Greatly apprciated BPJ
ulsterlad2 Posted 19 April , 2013 Share Posted 19 April , 2013 Hi Bradley There are medal index cards for Canadians. They are a different layout from the British version and can only be seen by getting the person's service file. As far as I'm aware service personnel from any part of the Empire got the same medals as long as they met the qualifying criteria of course. Here's my 2 uncles mics as examples. One set foot in France on 28/08/16 and the other on 06/12/16. They qualified for the BWM and Victory Medals as indicated by the crossed out B and V on the top right. . LarsA Posted 20 April , 2013 Share Posted 20 April , 2013 Canadians who came to britain but did not enter F & F received a BWM, without the VM. As per the regulations. ATB, Lars
ulsterlad2 Posted 20 April , 2013 Share Posted 20 April , 2013 Canadians who came to britain but did not enter F & F received a BWM, without the VM. As per the regulations. ATB, Lars True Lars. It was the act of leaving of your native shore that qualified you for that one rather than actually entering a theatre of war. There's always exceptions though. On the forum there's a few threads about some, (I think) UK coastal battery soldiers receiving the BWM.
BPJermyn Posted 21 April , 2013 Author Share Posted 21 April , 2013 Thanks for the information and insight. First answering my initial question and then shedding light on what that index card was. I have it for my grandfather and for others I have researched but as it's not laid out like our British counterparts I was never able to determine what exactly it was; it really isn't as clear. Many thanks............ BPJ
BPJermyn Posted 21 April , 2013 Author Share Posted 21 April , 2013 Now I look closer and I can see the medal this man was eligible for - not the 14/15 star. Can you help me with what his family would have received?

ulsterlad2 Posted 21 April , 2013 Share Posted 21 April , 2013 He was eligible for the BW and Victory Medals. As he didn't enter a theatre of war until 11/02/17 he didn't qualify for the 1914-1915 Star. 31/12/15 was the last qualifying day for that one. BPJermyn Posted 22 April , 2013 Author Share Posted 22 April , 2013 One follow up - if I may - assuming his family would have received the WW1 Death Plaque and the Memorial Cross. Is there way to determine the family receipts of these like their British Counterparts?
pylon1357 Posted 22 April , 2013 Share Posted 22 April , 2013 One follow up - if I may - assuming his family would have received the WW1 Death Plaque and the Memorial Cross. Is there way to determine the family receipts of these like their British Counterparts? If you look at the first card you posted, you will find your answer. That card is one filled out for the Memorial Scroll and Plaque. The scroll was sent to his father as named on the index card on Feb 9 1921 The Plaque was also sent to his father but on April 5 1922. The bottom part, although smudged by the stamps for the Scroll and Plaque, shows the Memorial Cross sent to his mother June 4 1920. I hope this helps. Just a quick note, the second photo you posted is the Medals Index Card.
BPJermyn Posted 22 April , 2013 Author Share Posted 22 April , 2013 just have to look at bit closer - and know what I was looking for! Many many thanks BPJ
pylon1357 Posted 22 April , 2013 Share Posted 22 April , 2013 You are most welcome. The cards are actually, for the lack of a better description, 'very busy'. lots of information all scribbled and stamped on top of each other. It can be difficult to sort it all out without experience. Take the Medals Index Card for example, (the second one posted that is sort of yellow card stock) the indicator for what medals he was entitled to is located on the right upper corner of the card. The red B is the British War Medal, the V (which looks most times like a check mark) is for the Victory Medal. Of course when this is reviewed and issued, they do put a check mark or x over the letter to indicate it has been processed. You asked many pointed questions and in doing so , I think many here learned something about how the Canadians paperwork in regards to medals and plaques ect were issued. The images you posted are very very typical of the way these look and it is nice to see these posted.
