Bravery Decorations

Upon notification in the field of an award, let's say a MM, I presume the recipient would put up a ribbon at once where it was available, how soon after could the recipient expect the actual medal?

It varied. There are several examples in my knowledge of 'ribbon parades' where, after the award was mentioned in Army Orders, a senior officer would pin the ribbons of the decorations on the recipients. This would be, sometimes, well in advance of the promulgation of the award in the London Gazette - which, by inexact rule of thumb often used on here is around three months after the action. As to the actual receipt of a physical medal - partner's grandfather was awarded an MM for an action in March 1918 as a Lineman, RE Signal Service. The medal came in the post in 1923. (His service record has the completed receipt).

Thanks for the reply, very interesting, I presume the delay was due to overwhelming medal production including service medals.
