Khaki Posted 12 April , 2013 Share Posted 12 April , 2013 Upon notification in the field of an award, let's say a MM, I presume the recipient would put up a ribbon at once where it was available, how soon after could the recipient expect the actual medal? khaki
Staffsyeoman Posted 13 April , 2013 Share Posted 13 April , 2013 It varied. There are several examples in my knowledge of 'ribbon parades' where, after the award was mentioned in Army Orders, a senior officer would pin the ribbons of the decorations on the recipients. This would be, sometimes, well in advance of the promulgation of the award in the London Gazette - which, by inexact rule of thumb often used on here is around three months after the action. As to the actual receipt of a physical medal - partner's grandfather was awarded an MM for an action in March 1918 as a Lineman, RE Signal Service. The medal came in the post in 1923. (His service record has the completed receipt).
Khaki Posted 14 April , 2013 Author Share Posted 14 April , 2013 Thanks for the reply, very interesting, I presume the delay was due to overwhelming medal production including service medals. khaki
