The Scottish National War Memorial site confirms that William Wright s/40090 was born in Penicuik, Midlothian. I can supply a little bit of family background for him which has been taken from the GROS (Scotlands People) site.

William Wright married Esther Shannon Colligan at Penicuik on 22 November 1912 at 6 Fieldsend, Penicuik. Due to the 100 year rule, I cannot view any birth certificates after 1912 but an Esther Shannon Wright was born in Penicuik in 1913 so it is a reasonable guess she was the daughter of William and Esther. There may have been other children in the marriage but I cannot tell from the internet.

I could not find William Wright in the 1911 Census but in the 1901 Census, there is a record of 11 year old William living with his mother Helen Vickers and stepfather Alexander at 19a Fieldsend, Penicuik. Siblings were James (19), John (17), Matthew (15) and Jane (13). All the children were born in Penicuik.

Hope this is of some use

Douglas
