Roger D Posted 3 April , 2013 Share Posted 3 April , 2013 Can anyone confirm how it was decided how those who died in the UK, whilst on active service, were buried. Locally I am aware of both men who died and were buried here but whose family come from hundreds of miles away and people who died a long way from here but were brought back and were buried locally. I have a feeling I may have read in the dim and distant past that a basic funeral at a site close to death would be paid for. If you wanted the person buried locally to you then you would have to foot the cost of returning the body to their home area and the funeral. Did I read that somewhere or am I making things up as I go along? Thank you.
myos Posted 3 April , 2013 Share Posted 3 April , 2013 Roger Robinson Parkinson, 1/4th Loyal North Lancs, died after being innoculated for sevice abroad at Swindon. The authorities would pay to have him buried in Swindon, but not to send his body home to Lytham. A public subscription raised the money to return him to his home town, where he was interred at St John's Church. Andy
