margaretdufay Posted 29 March , 2013 Share Posted 29 March , 2013 Have lived over here for more years than I care to remember, but this is the first time I have come across ammunition, true to say that I have been visiting more cemeteries to take photos recently, but this morning was at a small country cemetery when I saw this lying next to the cemetery, must admit I kept well away but managed to take a photo of it. Can anyone tell me what it is exactly? I think the local farmers are quite brave people as I know they come across these things quite regularly. spconnolly007 Posted 29 March , 2013 Share Posted 29 March , 2013 This could be a possible? British 4.5" Howitzer, but hopefully someone who knows what they are talking about will be along to confirm Sean.
Tom Morgan Posted 29 March , 2013 Share Posted 29 March , 2013 I'm not sure of the calibre but I think it's British and it's high explosive. Definitely best left alone! Tom

RobL Posted 29 March , 2013 Share Posted 29 March , 2013 Definitely matches the shape of the 4.5, also matches the shape of my 60 pdr shrapnell shell mk 2, but that would be bigger, 5.5 in diameter
Tom Tulloch-Marshall Posted 29 March , 2013 Share Posted 29 March , 2013 British, high explosive, 18 pounder. Fairly certain, but knowing the length and diameter would be handy. Tom

RobL Posted 29 March , 2013 Share Posted 29 March , 2013 Shape doesn't match that of an 18 pounder HE shell, it's tapered much nearer the bottom; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:18pdr_HE_Fixed_Round.jpg
