Remembered Today:

WW1 Tank Corps

Hello. I am researching a soldier, Jake Cuthbert, that served in the WW1 Tank Corps per his medal card. Is it true to say that all Tank Corps regiments took part in the Battle of Cambrai? Unfortunately, I do not know which Tank Corps battalion he belogned to.

If you mean 1st Cambrai then yes all nine battalions were involved. If you mean 2nd Cambrai (also a major tank action) then no not all.

To clarify a little, all nine Battalions that were in France at the time took part in 1st Cambrai. Other battalions were forming in England, and there was a detachment in Gaza so if your man belonged to one of these then he wouldn't have been at 1st Cambrai. Eventually there were, IIRC, 26 battalions.

Wasn't the Gaza detachment on it's way home - and maybe home before 1st Cambrai? Sans tanks of course but its just possible that some might have taken part. Of course there were Tank Corps men all over the place (there was a crew in North America at the time) but it's like any battalion - just because any battalion of any part of the army was involved in a particular battle doesn't mean every member of that unit was. But in terms of the question in OP effectively all the Tank Corps were involved, every man and tank available and effective was thrown into the battle.

17tankman,

How do you know he belogned to the 6th battalion? Do you have access to any records with his name mentioned? I recently ordered the page entry from the National Archive. Can anything more be learned from this entry?
