John Gilinsky Posted 3 April , 2016 Share Posted 3 April , 2016 Hi. Although I have tried to find Glencoe [ War Hospital? ] that was offered right in August 1914 and accepted by the War Office for use as a war hospital by Lady Strathcona (died in 1926) based of course in Glencoe, Scotland [ used by NHS for over 50 years and sold by them in circa 2011 - 2102 re-opened as a luxury B & B in 2015 ]I cannot. Does anyone have ANY information, documents, photographs, where the hospital records are, admission/discharge registers/ledgers/books, correspondence files, orders/regulations, concert programs, ephemera, postcards, photos etc....? The NHS was planning to produce a commemorative booklet but I have not seen it though it might have been produced in limited quantities for locals etc.... due to costs etc.... Does anyone know where the good administrative history of this institution is (from August 1914 to at least 2011)? There is another institution that I have found in southern England (Kent) that is still in existence and was used to house convalescing Canadian troops (officers only I think). This latter institution was also built as a country manor (though not nearly as ostententious as the Strathcona one) and indeed pre-dates by over 20 years the Glencoe building. I do hope someone can help! Tx, John
Andy Wade Posted 3 April , 2016 Share Posted 3 April , 2016 My grandfather lance Corporal R Barrett of the 1/4th Berkshire Regimnet was sent to Keighley Victoria Auxiliary hospital which was part of the Morton bank. The records for these are kept Keighley Reference library which should re-open in August/September this year. Another point of contact could be a Frank Atkins who is the Publicity Officer for Keighley & District Local History Society, as he done his dissertationon Morton Bank Hospital between 1914-1918. Nick The Morton Banks Hospital patients register is complete and in the archives at Keighley Library. It's a huge ledger book with thousands of names and details in it and it's not hard to read either. We are looking into transcribing the whole thing once funding for the project is sorted out. In the meantime the register is under 'open access' so anyone can go in and see it at the library, Good idea to ring them first (preferably the day before you go) and book a session to look at it. This is necessary as not all of their staff (some are only part time) are aware of how to access the archives and the full time staff can make sure it's available if you give them notice. They are very helpful about it - as long as they know in advance.
TEW Posted 3 April , 2016 Share Posted 3 April , 2016 John, Googling for Glencoe hospital only produces WW2 results. It may have been offered and even accepted for use as a hospital but maybe the WO never took it over. Seale Hayne was offered to the WO in 1914 and just sat on a list of potential properties until Dec 1917. I can see the Canadian connection with Lord Strathcona and that he funded another hospital. Perhaps the WO felt it was a little remote? TEW
John Gilinsky Posted 4 April , 2016 Share Posted 4 April , 2016 Tx TEW for your helpfulness and you may be more than correct in the wait and see for such a TOO beautiful, restful location and building! What I find so fascinating is to compare in historical context my local (i.e. Toronto, Ontario) Canadian Red Cross "hospital" post-war with the Canadian sponsored, donated, staffed or serviced facilities anywhere: summer resorts, beach resorts, cottage type buildings, manor buildings, estates, palaces, etc.... Another local Toronto woman offered her London England house right from August 1914 as a small officer's convalescent hospital and the WO definitely accepted the offer (I believe the Toronto woman offered to pay for the operational costs of most if not all the hospital) immediately and the hospital opened "right away." What I am trying to do is to gauge as accurately as possible the types of hopsitalized accommodations that CEF members in particular would have had access to or actually been hospitalized in. Such facilities as "Huts" (rear lines/lines of communication), R & R Centers, Divisional Rest Centers, Convalescent Depots, Convalescent Homes, Red Cross Lodges [ these were built in Canada as part of the auxiliary support to major Canadian veteran's hospitals ], etc... are also all of interest for contextual comparison. The local hospital that I am writing the history was built in 3 weeks from the ground up. BTW: in my own old postcard collection I have several postcards from latter 1918 and possibly immediate post-war showing "patients" undergoing military drill. TEW Posted 4 April , 2016 Share Posted 4 April , 2016 It seems the list of UK hospitals may not cover those in Canadian only use. Buxton & Granville don't get much of a mention and Devizes is down as a detention hospital for VD treatment. Pretty sure that doesn't apply to the Canadian officers there. Also found a man from Strathcona's Horse being admitted to Thorncombe hospital, Bramley. The collectionscanada website has a lot on the different hospitals but still lacking anything for Glencoe (unless it went by a different name). Leancoil Hospital, Forres, Scotland was bequeathed £10,000 by Lord Strathcona in 1915. This definitely treated soldiers, other hospitals in N Scotland treated English, Irish and Belgian soldiers. So perhaps my suggestion of remoteness doesn't add up. Lady Edith Congleton joined the VAD and worked in London, there are about 40 VADs with Glencoe on their cards but seem to all be house names elsewhere. There was a Strathcona Military Hospital, Edmonton South in 1918. Ah, Dundee Courier 17th Oct 1914 - Individual gifts 'Lady Strathcona £12,000 use of Glencoe as Hospital' Seeing as Lady Strathcona was an heir to £4.6 million in 1914 and she offered to equip and maintain the hospital out of her own pocket you'd think the WO would jump at it. Yorkshire Post, Sept 4th 1914. Any chance of seeing some of the postcards? TEW
John Gilinsky Posted 5 April , 2016 Share Posted 5 April , 2016 Thanks so much TEW for your persistence and finally getting contemporary news accounts of the offer. Now we need to know if during 1914-1919 Glencoe Manor was ever used as a military facility and especially as a military hospital. What are the closest to Glencoe major Scottish Highland newspapers that may be digitized (in English not Gaelic!) that would be a great source and could be keyword searchable? If you know can you please advise with URL's? I will check out the DUNDEE COURIER. The whole issue of exactly all the institutions where all the Canadians were hospitalized appears to have been generally conceded to the official DND historians in Ottawa especially the medical historian (see the 1925 official medical history of the CEF). However we know of course that a fair if not a good number of privately offered, private medical facilities and temporary local responses as well as in-transit/lines of communication facilities are NOT mentioned let alone listed in the 1925 and other official (Canadian or British) histories. In Canada, USA, Great Britain and France there were facilities treating Canadians that are NOT listed/mentioned in any of the official histories. As per your request for scanning the postcards. These are in storeage and are only accessible on a limited basis. I MAY however be able to get one or two scans up possibly. If so I will remember your request and make sure that you are notified IF I do carry this through.
Sue Light Posted 5 April , 2016 Share Posted 5 April , 2016 Over time I've compiled a database of 2,893 hospitals in the UK, both those run directly by the War Office (Military Hospitals) and those run under the Joint War Committee of the BRCS and Order of St. John (Auxiliary Hospitals). This has been compiled mostly from lists published by the British Red Cross prior to 1916, and an official list published by the War Office in October 1917. The JWC lists also include auxiliary hospitals that had opened and then closed prior to the end of 1916. There is no mention at all of any auxiliary hospital that includes the word 'Glencoe'. The database includes 19 hospitals reserved solely for Canadians, all of which were large Military Hospitals or Camp Hospitals administered directly by the War Office (possibly one more or one less as I did the count in a hurry). There were also two small auxiliary hospitals reserved solely for Canadian officers, both in London - the I.O.D.E. hospital at 1 Hyde Park Place for 24 officers, and the Perkins Bull Hospital, 8 Heathview Gardens, Putney, for 25 officers. When the war started there were hundreds of offers of facilities for wounded soldiers, many in large country houses. A great many of these were turned down because of lack of facilities, perceived difficulties with staffing, distance from a railway station, and ease of access for ambulances throughout the year. All patients in small auxiliary hospitals were treated initially in a Military Hospital and later transferred to one of the auxiliary hospitals attached to it. This was a random decision dictated by where there were vacancies on any particular day. So Canadian soldiers could (and did) end up in auxiliary hospitals anywhere, together with soldiers from the UK, Australia etc. If there had have been a hospital at Glencoe House, it would provided accommodation for any soldier who was sent there of whatever nationality. As the war progressed more dedicated hospitals were provided for Canadians/Australians and they were filtered off following disembarkation in England though they could still have been admitted anywhere that there were vacant beds. So there there were probably hundreds of military and auxiliary hospitals that at some time had Canadian soldiers as patients, but this was less likely from 1916 onwards when they had their own medical facilities. If Glencoe House was offered, I imagine that it lost out due to its remote location, lack of nearby rail connections and likely problems with transport of patients in and out for a large part of the year. Moonraker Posted 5 April , 2016 Share Posted 5 April , 2016 It seems the list of UK hospitals may not cover those in Canadian only use. Buxton & Granville don't get much of a mention and Devizes is down as a detention hospital for VD treatment... This thread is very long and so a little cumbersome, but I wonder if "the list" is that given in post 122, which mention Devizes as one of several hospitals "used for soldiers undergoing detention or awaiting trial who required treatment for VD". My own understanding is that there was a detention barracks at Devizes, but I've found no other references to it including a hospital and certainly not one specifically for VD cases, though there may have been a sick ward. As for Canadians, they were prominent in Wiltshire only from mid-October 1914 to mid-February 1915, during which time a number of buildings were used briefly as hospitals and convalescent homes for Canadian soldiers - at Figheldean, Bulford, Littleton Pannell, Market Lavington and Netheravon, for example. A few Canadians were admitted to Devizes County Asylum. I suspect that I may have missed something in this discussion and hope I haven't confused the issue. If someone would patiently point me to references to Devizes as having a VD hospital I should be grateful. Moonraker
TEW Posted 5 April , 2016 Share Posted 5 April , 2016 Moonraker My ref. to Devizes in post#705 came from The LLT page on Military hospitals in the British Isles 1914-1918. I suspect the list in post#122 came from the same source. I then found a ref. to No. 1 General Hospital, CEF; No. 1 Canadian General Hospital, BEF - Correspondence - Convalescent Hospitals, Red Cross Hospital, Devizes on the collectionscanada archive. Sadly, the page says: Warning: Descriptive record is in process. These materials may not yet be available for consultation. And it's not available. Another ref. to Devizes VD on the BBC website, who sourced their info from The LLT above. Seems the AIF had a VD hospital at Bulford but wanted more. They asked for Wandsworth but were offered Gloucester and Devizes, not clear if they accepted the offer. TEW
TEW Posted 5 April , 2016 Share Posted 5 April , 2016 John The refs. I found came from the British Newspaper Archive. The Dundee Courier 17/10/14 snippet is very small and says no more than I put in post#705. I assume it means she gave £12,000 to help fund the war AND offered use of Glencoe as hospital. The other cutting, Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer - Friday 04 September 1914 is a little more informative. A subscription is needed to view the pages but the index is searchable without one. For the Yorkshire post cutting you'd see: using STRATHCONA and GLENCOE as search terms. Cheapest option is for a 1 month subscription at £12.95, make sure you untick the automatic renewal option in account settings. I didn't bother with filtering different papers, just by date and different terms. I did look through to 1919 and saw no more. There are lots of hits for members of Strathcona's Horse being admitted to various hospitals so that gets a bit tedious. I had assumed when you said: I have several postcards from latter 1918 and possibly immediate post-war showing "patients" undergoing military drill. That the postcards showed patients undergoing military drill at Glencoe. If you think they are at Glencoe then it would be nice to see them one day. John Gilinsky Posted 6 April , 2016 Share Posted 6 April , 2016 Tew (et als): Sorry the postcards are of southern England and definitely NOT Glencoe! They are of interest as showing "neurasthenic" patients though undergoing as therapy military drill at the hospital 1918 - possibly post-Armistice as well. I am off to the Canadian Red Cross to get at original docs for my local hospital
Moonraker Posted 6 April , 2016 Share Posted 6 April , 2016 TEW, thanks for that. Part of Devizes Prison was turned into a detention barracks on October 8, 1914 (just before the Canadians arrived in Wiltshire). I don't think it could be classed as a VD hospital, though I can accept that it "had a small specialist venereal disease unit". maI This would have been separate to the Red Cross hospital, which was at Beltwood Dalling (better known as Braeside) and staffed mainly by VADs I have information about AIF detention barracks in the UK, with references to facilities for VD patients, including at Bulford, but fear that posting this might distract from the current discussion. corshamcan Posted 13 April , 2016 Share Posted 13 April , 2016 Following similar requests in this thread does anyone know of any hospital admission or patient lists for Oakwood Hospital in Rotherham in 1915/1916. I know that my wife's grandfather Private William Hooper of the 1/8th Worcester Regt was there in 1916 recouperating from a serious head injury which left him paralysed for the rest of his life. I don't know when he was admitted there and when he was discharged. I know that he went on to the Star and Garter Home in Richmond in 1918 - what was the criteria for admission to the Star and Garter? Appreciate any prompts, thankyou. Acknown Posted 14 April , 2016 Share Posted 14 April , 2016 I’ve just come across this subject and wonder if you have the Old Hastings House Auxiliary Hospital at what is now 132 High Street, Hastings, East Sussex TN34 3ET. My distant relative Constance Foyster, the daughter of a local rector, was the Commandant. In 1920, she was awarded an MBE for her work there. The building is now a residential home. webbyg Posted 3 February , 2017 Share Posted 3 February , 2017 Sorry if this is the wrong place but I am looking for sources that might throw some light on the military hospital in Woking. I know it was based at 'Beechcroft', Heathside Road (where the current Woking Community Hospital is now). I also know it had around 300 beds. But that seems to be it... Any ideas, please? Ally, I very interesting list and as I was about to do the same I now realise the work has been done! I wonder, though, if you could clarify the hospitals in Woking? I believe the Inkerman Barracks had a veneral disease unit, but the Beechcroft Auxiliary Hospital I find to be also located in Heathside Road (where the current Community Hospital is) and at St John's. Also where was the Woking Military Hospital; I haven't come across that one? Also any chance of directing me to your sources? Graham
Ally Sloper Posted 8 February , 2017 Share Posted 8 February , 2017 Hello Webbyg, Thanks for your post. Inkerman Barracks Hospital and the Woking War Hospital are the same hospital and was a type A hospital so received patients directly from the frontline. This and Beechcroft Hospital appear to have existed for most of the war, unlike some hospitals which disappear after about six months. There was also a Woking hospital depot and Woking Victoria Hospital which although not a military hospital offered to treat soldiers and their families free of charge. I am not sure how Woking War Hospital was laid out, although I would not be surprised if it did not have a VD unit since it was a real problem within the army, with some hospitals being set up especially to treat it, for example on 9 October 1917 one was set up at Witley camp in Surrey with a capacity of 600 beds! I hope this helps you. Best wishes Laurence
webbyg Posted 9 February , 2017 Share Posted 9 February , 2017 Ally Thank you. There is quite a lot more out there that I have pulled together on Auxiliary Military Hospitals in Surrey (I am writing it up for the Surrey in the Great War Project), but equally some large gaps in information on I suspect the smaller units. I am still slightly mystified about Beechcroft in Heathside Road vs St John's. Regards Graham

suesalter1 Posted 2 March , 2017 Share Posted 2 March , 2017 One of my great-uncles was in the 4th Scottish Hospital in Glasgow (he wasn't Scottish, by the way). He was there 7 months with a shattered right shoulder blade and only discharged after the Armistice. Does any photos exist, I wonder? Sue.
