George Permanent Base - i.e unfit for the front line but can still be used for something else. I would suspect PU in the case probably means permanently unfit. Odd though that they then say there was no evidence of a disability upon discharge. Craig
George Rayner Posted 3 September , 2019 Share Posted 3 September , 2019 Unfortunate that he died before the medical board filled in his form then if the army had decided that. Suspect that is not enough evidence for Terry! George

IPT Posted 4 September , 2019 Share Posted 4 September , 2019 Personally, i think it's this chap, although his date of birth was 19/1/1854; British Medical Journal 1892 - THE NAVY. Surgeon William Hayes has been placed on the retired list, August 3rd. His commission was dated February 26th, 1881. He was court-martialled aboard HMS Porpoise in 1892 and deprived of his seniority. He retired (unfit) in August 1892 and appears to receive a pension from then until 7th October 1919. https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7584788 https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7614900 (Wish I could make out the details) 1911 census - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Queenstown/Brighton_Terrace/405208/ HAYES—On Oct. 7th, at Fort Lisle House, Queenstown, Surgeon William Hayes, R.N. (retired), youngest son of the late William Hayes, Esq., of Kilcully House, Co. Cork. Funeral on this day (Thursday), at 11 a.m., for Old Church, Queenstown. museumtom Posted 4 September , 2019 Author Share Posted 4 September , 2019 Great find, thank you IPT. If he retired in 1892 he would not qualify. Great research, thanks ITP. Kind regards. Tom.

Same man? Cannot make out the address in the image. Is it a Cork newspaper? Did he use an alias I wonder. I cannot yet find a later record for him under either surname. There is no appropriate record on CWGC of any RMF sergeant or any other rank, with either of the relevant names or a known alias, or with relevant NoK Edited 5 September , 2019 by Mark1959
museumtom Posted 5 September , 2019 Author Share Posted 5 September , 2019 Thank you Mark. Try as I might, like yourself I could not find him either for service during the war years. It is a Cork newspaper and the image is what is in the paper. Lots of this faded pages in them for whatever reason. I could not even find a death certificate for him. I had a search through the Cork lads and none used the alias O'Connell. I am surprised you found him pre-war, well done and thank you Mark. Kind regards. Tom. museumtom Posted 5 September , 2019 Author Share Posted 5 September , 2019 That could show Mark you could be bang on with your age or born 1890ish in your link. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/North_West_Ward/Waggetts_Lane/1162940/ Mark your record shows him as O';Connell but when you compare it with the Census they are the same lad. https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBM%2FWO96%2F0965%2F225%2F001&parentid=GBM%2FWO96%2F965%2F1493677
