museumtom Posted 29 August , 2019 Author Share Posted 29 August , 2019 Excellent information from Skipman and Bob has provided the information to allow this sailor to go forward. He has been sent to Terry, so fingers crossed, I should hear shortly. Thanks again lads!!!

Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 29 August , 2019 Share Posted 29 August , 2019 I think the cause is spelt incorrectly and should be 'Locomotor Ataxia': https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locomotor_ataxia
museumtom Posted 29 August , 2019 Author Share Posted 29 August , 2019 Excellent Bob (for your PM and information) George and Dyfed! museumtom Posted 29 August , 2019 Author Share Posted 29 August , 2019 'No. Died of different illness' So I sent Tabes dorsalis, , also called Progressive Locomotor Ataxia, rare neurologic form of tertiary syphilis, involving sensory deficits, loss of neuromuscular coordination, and diminished reflexes. museumtom Posted 29 August , 2019 Author Share Posted 29 August , 2019 He died from Phthisis which is TB and was discharged with Locomotor Ataxia. So they do not tally, it was worth a shot lads!

Mark1959 Posted 29 August , 2019 Share Posted 29 August , 2019 (edited) As I cannot see the link above. CPO Michael Curran of correct address. Discharged with “tubercle of lung”, “aggravated”. https://www.fold3.com/image/644985671 Widow’s claim https://www.fold3.com/image/645321139 Born 28/9/2875 Discharged 28/11/1917 in from 1891 Edited 29 August , 2019 by Mark1959
Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 29 August , 2019 Share Posted 29 August , 2019 I can't see Mark's Fold 3 links, but from what he writes, there appears to be a discrepancy between the Fold 3 and the document in George's post (#2661). Yet the DC posted by Tom gives a date of discharge of September 1916, which fits with being 4 yrs and 2 months before the date of death, But the cause of death and discharge are different. Very odd. George Rayner Posted 30 August , 2019 Share Posted 30 August , 2019 Perhaps 4yr 2 mnths refers to onset of disease? Discharged later? So not 'my' Curran? George
museumtom Posted 30 August , 2019 Author Share Posted 30 August , 2019 Thank you George, I find these Mercantile lads very hard to find. Thank you for trying. If he is not your Curran, he might qualify after all. Thank you Mark for Folder3, I did not realize it covered naval men, I live and learn. I have passed it on to Terry and have my fingers crossed. Thank you Dyfed for all you help and observations! Keep up the great work lads and lassies. Kind regards. Tom.
Mark1959 Posted 30 August , 2019 Share Posted 30 August , 2019 Looking at his service record Here I think Ancestry may have have misinterpreted the last date on it. There is no date on the WFA cards. So I think that George’s date of discharge is the correct one for Curran.
museumtom Posted 30 August , 2019 Author Share Posted 30 August , 2019 Thank you Mark, it is confusing. Is 162527 Curran the right man? If it is him was he discharged with TB please?
little bob Posted 30 August , 2019 Share Posted 30 August , 2019 Looks like Curran 162527 is the right man. See post " Michael Curran " in Sailors, Navies and the war at sea. Bob
