Royal Engineer help please

Can someone please tell me if it is possible to learn service details about a Royal Engineer without a service record.

He was George William Best b.1884 Heighington, Durham, RE 206539 and Labour Corps 591649. (MIC from Ancestry)

Family stories suggest he did not go overseas, although I have a photo of him as wounded wearing the hospital blue jacket. Also since he transferred to the Labour Corps I suspect it was due to an injury.

I believe he was conscripted in 1916 and may have attested at Darlington, Durham or vicinity.

I found a man on CWGC who was a Royal Engineer 206538, killed 19 Dec 1917 in a railway accident at a military camp near Larkhill. If the numbers were consecutive could Spr Best been sent to the same railway camp?

G.W. Best was a Machinist for the railway at home before the war.

Is there anyway to learn more about this man? Thank you.

Hi Meadowcroft

There is a MIC for him earning a pair so he did serve abroad from 1916 onwards. I can't help with the RE number but his LC number suggests he was transferred between MAy and September 1918.
