oxlade134 Posted 17 May , 2016 Share Posted 17 May , 2016 Jason discovered you great work transcribing the war diary today and will make use of it to plot the war experience of Arthur Charles Hill 1890-1926 Guardsman 24062. Arthur was probably wounded as he dies 36 years in 1926. cant find any records except medal card for him.
Derek Black Posted 17 May , 2016 Share Posted 17 May , 2016 Oxlade134, My understanding is that the records of men who finished their careers with a guards regiment all survive, they were stored elsewhere.

clk Posted 17 May , 2016 Share Posted 17 May , 2016 Hi, I too thought service records were still held in the regimental archive. There are a couple of records though on Ancestry. His medal roll which indicates that he only served in active theatre with the 3rd Battalion. (NB the roll doesn't always reflect the actualities of service. For example the service record of a GG that I'm aware of shows that he was posted for time to an entrenching battalion, but that isn't reflected in his roll entry). He also has a SWB record which shows that he enlisted on 7.6.1915 and was discharged due to sickness (rather than wounds) on 1.3.1917. oxlade134 Posted 17 May , 2016 Share Posted 17 May , 2016 Thanks Chris Will download those records from Ancestry. That fits well with his death in 1926 ie sickness and a discharge. My only problem is identifying positively. He was from Hendon last address 1911 census ; 330 the Broadway Hendon so to make certain i have the correct arthur charles hill (pretty common name afraid) I have enquired at the g gds museum to see if they will confirm his home address without the search fee which is pretty steep.
