David B Posted 21 October , 2012 Share Posted 21 October , 2012 Possible, of course that when the MICs were being transcribed the writer got things a bit mixed up. I say this because there is another William Greedy also of the SLI but no unit number being given on the MIC. This ones service number was 2399 and 200637 Labour corps. Probably only the medal rolls would sort it out, as there are no service records for either man listed.
Jo. Posted 22 October , 2012 Author Share Posted 22 October , 2012 If the other William Greedy, comes from the Taunton area, (Wellington, Wiveliscome) then it's probably L/Corp Williams relation could be an uncle or cousin! I've not explored the other family members as yet, just researched the main lines back, noting siblings in each generation, but not who they married or when the went etc. A project once I can't go back any further down the generations Luckily, the CWGC list L.Corp address, so I know I'm researching the right one. When I found the SLI Medal Roll on the TNA, but alas SLI isn't digitised, and looking at 'Ordering' a copy it isn't very clear whether you can order just the single page of this particular document or not, but have put in an estimate request for a single page to see what they say! The ignoring thing, is I'm actually in London for a couple of days next week, but no time within my busy schedule to pay a visit myself, so depending what I hear back from the TNA, I will have to consider my next lot of options,
Alan Tucker Posted 22 October , 2012 Share Posted 22 October , 2012 I am following this thread with interest as my maternal grandmother was a Greedy from Wiveliscombe.
Jo. Posted 27 September , 2014 Author Share Posted 27 September , 2014 I thought I would up date this post.... William enlisted in 1914 but didn't got to France until 1915. The enlisted with the 8th bat but then transferred to the 6th William was wounded on the 18th September 1916, A sad tale... William was hit in the back by a bullet and fell just after going over the top, his friend F.Dubfield explained in a letter to William's mum, that he couldn't turn back for William when he fell, but once they had won the German Trench he crawled over no-mans land to find William, dragged him into a shell hole and made him comfortable, then crawled back to the trench, told the medic's where to find William.... F.Dubfield was writing to gt grandmother to return the ring that William had given him to send home, and to apologise that the watch William had also given him he had lost in a scrap with the Germans. William had only been back in France for 5 weeks when he was wounded, after recovering from a kidney problem in Hospital, a Red Cross hospital located in his home town of Taunton. I still have more research to do, via records held at Somerset Heritage Centre, and of cause cross referencing the war diaries.... And I do now have a photograph of William,
