zijde26 Posted 20 October , 2012 Share Posted 20 October , 2012 Does anyone know if there was a Cardoen farm in Woesten (not that far from Popering(h)e) ? Thanks. Gilbert Deraedt
keithjk Posted 20 October , 2012 Share Posted 20 October , 2012 Yes there was Gilbert, behind Canada Farm Cemetery. Keith
Aurel Sercu Posted 20 October , 2012 Share Posted 20 October , 2012 True, but I have always associated it with territory Elverdinge, being north of the road Elverdinge - Poperinge. Maybe I should have a look where the border Elverdinge - Woesten was exactly. Aurel
zijde26 Posted 20 October , 2012 Author Share Posted 20 October , 2012 Thanks, Keith. Interested in a scan of a ww1-photo of that farm and a zeppelin above that said farm. Gilbert Deraedt
keithjk Posted 20 October , 2012 Share Posted 20 October , 2012 Interestingly, t'Wilgenerf guesthouse just down the road from Canada Farm cemetery is run by Jenny Cardoen (no relation apparently) Keith
sabine72 Posted 22 October , 2012 Share Posted 22 October , 2012 One the relatives of Cardoen farm is still living in the village of Elverdinge. My parents live at cardoen farm for the moment. Kind regards Sabine
mebu Posted 23 October , 2012 Share Posted 23 October , 2012 I seem to remember that engineer stores and workshop were based at Cardoen farm.......and the wooden A frames for front line trenches were produced there. Peter

sabine72 Posted 25 October , 2012 Share Posted 25 October , 2012 Looks like it, but I'm not sure. Could you enlarge the buildings, Sabine

Aurel Sercu Posted 25 October , 2012 Share Posted 25 October , 2012 Sabine, I have downloaded a couple of pics from the website Westhoek Verbeeldt, now pics and then (WOI) pics. Not sure if I can post them here though, besides they have the WV mark all over the photo. But if you go to http://www.westhoekverbeeldt.be/ and in the Zoeken box fill in Cardoen, and in the drop down menu next to it select Ieper, then you will see, among the almost 200 pics a handful of Cardoen farm pics, two even of the farm during WWI. Not taken from the same position as the zeppelin photo, but there is no doubt for me : the farm in the back ground of the zeppelin photo is Cardoen farm. I am 99.9 % sure. Look at : the way the buildings are arranged the position of the two chimneys on the roof top the tall trees in the background, of the road Elverdinge - Poperinge. As to Elverdinge or Woesten ? The farm is on the northside of the road Elverdinge - Woesten, territory Elverdinge. But the border Elverdinge - Woesten is only a little behind the farm. So it is possible theat the position of the zeppelin and/or the photographer is already Woesten. Aurel
Aurel Sercu Posted 25 October , 2012 Share Posted 25 October , 2012 The posted photo is a resized version (lower than 250 kb), and enlarging a detail would probably cause too much loss of quality. So I took the detail (the farm) from the original unresized photo. (Which I happen to have. Thank you, Gilbert. :-) ) Aurel P.S. And now I see there are actually 3 chimneys on the roof. Both on the zeppeling photo and also on the WW1 photo on the website I mentioned. So : no doubt, and this is Cardoen farm indeed.
sabine72 Posted 25 October , 2012 Share Posted 25 October , 2012 You are right Aurel, I see it now. My eyes had gone blurry at the moment I had a look. It is cardoen farm from a differet angle. Sabine
lennon09 Posted 8 January , 2015 Share Posted 8 January , 2015 Can someone confirm that Canada Farm (after which the nearby cemetery is named) and Cardoen Farm are to seperate places? Does Canada Farm still existing?
Aurel Sercu Posted 8 January , 2015 Share Posted 8 January , 2015 Lennon09, No, I'm afraid not. Cardoen Fm and Canada Fm are two different farms, though close to the cemetery. Aurel
