B181 Brigade RFA

I have found a relative whose service records show that he served as a driver in B181 Brigade Royal Field Artlllery in France from May 1917 to February 1919.

Can anyone tell me what sort of unit this was and what he would have been driving?

Thanks,

Martin.

Hello Martin

B Battery, 1281 Brigade RFA was part of 40 Division. They were equipped with six 18-pounder guns.

Its War Diary is in this file in the National Archives at Kew:

WO 95/2598 181 Brigade Royal Field Artillery 1916 June - 1919 Mar.

I don't think it is available online yet.

A Driver in the RFA would be one of three controlling a six-horse team, pulling either a gun or an ammunition wagon.

If you go to the parent site, The Long Long Trail, via the link at the top left of this page, you will be able to find out which battles 40 Div were engaged in during the period you mention.

Try this as a starting point: http://www.1914-1918.net/whatartbrig.htm and this: http://www.1914-1918.net/rfa_units.htm Both links to the LLT site which can be accesses via the Long Long Trail button at the top of the page.
