Hi Ed,

Around this time the 16th Division and the 49th Brigade (8th RIF) was in the Loos sector of the front holding the line. It did not take part in the beginning of the main Somme offensive. Instead during this period they undertook extensive trench raids and held the line. During the course of which they sustained the normal casualties associated with front line troops.

I'm sure another member with access to the war diary can pinpoint their exact position and the activities on the date you mentioned.

Will

Hi ED.

Here's a snap from a trench map showing the area where your GGF was killed.

Locations mentioned in the War Diary: Puits 14 Bis. English Alley. Meath Trench. Forrest Trench. Reserve Trench.

You're very welcome Ed.

I've just seen that your GGF is buried just a few places away from my GGU Joe in Bois-Carre Military Cemetery. If you have never been or don't have a photo you could email the very excellent Mick McCann on the britishwargraves.co.uk site who might be able to send you one.
