high wood Posted 14 October , 2012 Share Posted 14 October , 2012 I bought this map case this morning for less than a cup of Starbucks' coffee, not that I drink the stuff. It was in a box of tat at my local CBS. To say that I am pleased with it is an understatement and I have spent the afternoon cleaning it with saddle soap and rubbing leather balm in to it. It now looks a lot happier. I will post the "after" photographs later.
high wood Posted 14 October , 2012 Author Share Posted 14 October , 2012 And the reason that I am so delighted is that there is a name on one of the inside flaps.
high wood Posted 16 October , 2012 Author Share Posted 16 October , 2012 As you can see it has cleaned up nicely but probably needs a couple of more layers of the leather balm. As you have probably realised I am absoluted chuffed to have found an attributable piece of Great War equipment for my collection. 31-700001QMS Charles Alfred Jones disembarked in France on the 14th March 1915 and probably saw action at the battle of Festubert. He was promoted to RQMS and on the 14th February 1917 he was commissioned; rising to the rank of Lieutenant Quarter Master.
IPT Posted 16 October , 2012 Share Posted 16 October , 2012 A very nice item. This looks likely to be him, relinquishing his commission in 1921. He seems to have picked up an MC along the way - http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/32478/supplements/7871/page.pdf He seems to have got it in the 1919 New Year awards. Also, Territorial Decoration March 1919 - http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/31226/supplements/3397
high wood Posted 16 October , 2012 Author Share Posted 16 October , 2012 Thank you for the extra information. I was wondering if he acquired the map case only after being commissioned or would a QMS have carried one?
