davidbohl Posted 14 October , 2012 Share Posted 14 October , 2012 Researching Pte Fred Outhwaite of King's Liverpool Regt (No.1210). According to the National Archives Medal Cards he became a Captain in the SADF. Any scenarios of how this would come about would be of great help to me (or where he went in WW1) He subsequently went to S.A in 1922. Many thanks Dave Bohl Club Historian Sefton RUFC Liverpool
IPT Posted 14 October , 2012 Share Posted 14 October , 2012 He has a few pages of service papers which show that he originally enlisted into the 5th KLR on 1/6/1910, as an 18 year old warehouseman. He was discharged from the KLR in May 1916 on termination of his period of engagement.
davidbohl Posted 15 October , 2012 Author Share Posted 15 October , 2012 Thanks for that, on his medal card the S.A Def. F reference has an asterisk with NW / 7 / 29143 and the 15 Star dated 21/2/1915. Any thoughts on how I could chase that up, is the 29143 his new regt. number in the SADF ? many thanks
IPT Posted 15 October , 2012 Share Posted 15 October , 2012 No, that's not a service number. It appears to be written by the same hand that has recorded his application for the Territorial Force War Medal in 1927. I suspect that NW/7/29143 could be the appropriate medal roll page and number. I think you can take all the black handwriting as being written in 1927 in relation to that application.
davidbohl Posted 15 October , 2012 Author Share Posted 15 October , 2012 This explanation seems plausible:- "The actual meaning of the references appears to have been lost through time, but NW/7/nnnnn is a frequently seen type of reference which appears to refer to the order and despatch of the medals."
