Simon Weston Posted 14 October , 2012 Share Posted 14 October , 2012 I am researching the above soldier and need help. He enlisted as 225801 in the RNDY and also held number 69916 in the Devonshire Regiment. He died on 5th July 1918 as 44556 of the 8th Gloucestershire Regiment and is buried in St Sever Extension, Rouen. I assume he became a member of 16th Battalion Devonshire Regiment from the RNDY but would Ike to know how he became a Gloster. I would also like to understand the numbering system for the Devons. I could not find his service records. Thank you.
ddycher Posted 15 October , 2012 Share Posted 15 October , 2012 Abdon First thoughts are he joined the Devons in June 1918. I believe he was then part of a draft from the 3rd Devons to C Infantry Base Depot. From where they were posted on to the 8th Glosters. From a quick check I have ref's for this draft showing no's from 68961~69916 but this needs checking. The IBD no. conjecture based on other drafts w/ close regimental numbers. Let me dig a little deeper and get back to you. Regards Dave
ddycher Posted 15 October , 2012 Share Posted 15 October , 2012 Abdon Checking his Glosters no. rather than his Devons number gives a different route : 15th Devons then 4th Res Devons then G IBD / 2nd Devons then posted to 8th Glosters. He has an early Glosters no. which would have him transferring in April (I think as part of the 15th April 1918 draft at G IBD). It would appear he went to France intending to go to either the 1st or 2nd Devons and was then transferred to the 8th Glosters at the IBD. Hope it helps.
