geofffox Posted 13 October , 2012 Share Posted 13 October , 2012 Dear All I'm currently researching the Extra Reserve battalion my great-uncle served in during and prior to the Great War and would like to know when the decision was taken not to send these battalions abroad as garrison/line of communication troops as originally intended Was the decision taken before the war in light of the fact that they were invariably well below their official establishment, or did the government take the decision to keep them at home once the war had started? ss002d6252 Posted 13 October , 2012 Share Posted 13 October , 2012 A question was asked in parliament in 1912 regarding this: Special Reserve. HC Deb 23 July 1912 vol 41 c964 964 § 21. Mr. HUNT asked whether the Special Reserve is to be used for oversea service as complete units, or whether the men and officers are to be sent separately to reinforce the Expeditionary Force abroad? § Colonel SEELY The Irish Horse and the twenty-seven Extra Reserve battalions would be sent abroad as complete units. The remainder would furnish drafts as required. § Mr. HUNT Will not these drafts come to an end very soon? § Colonel SEELY No, it will depend on the number of men available and the number of drafts required.
