Dear All

I'm looking to find any information on Lt van der Osten of Jasta 11. I have no information at all, so I can't offer any leads I'm afraid, but if you can help, I'd be grateful.

Kind regards

Alex.

He's been mentioned on GWF before: http://1914-1918.inv...showtopic=36967

How much do you trust Wikipedia? http://en.wikipedia....g_von_der_Osten

Thanks Sandie, I have seen a copy if this photograph in a book that I have.

As was mentioned in the thread linked, van der Osten could have been the pilot that brought my great uncle down, so I was interested in his history.

Regards

Alex.

Hi Regulus

Yes, I know pretty much everything I can find out. He was killed on the 15th of September 1917 whilst acting as an observer in RE8 B765 flown 2Lt Hackman.

Many thanks for the photo, very interesting.

Regards

Alex.

Some information I retained on van der Osten from a catalogue entry when the plaque to another of his victims came up at auction a few years back.

"The ace Van Osten was himself shot down but survived active service in both wars before returning to his estates in Pomerania where at the time of his death in 1987 he is noted as being both the CO and the second last survivor of Jasta 11. He was actively involved in Richthofen Geschwader reunions."

It is brief but may be of interest.

Hi,

seems that no German pilot in particular claimed the RE8 B765 of Hackmann and Powney

Thanks for the info Jonathan, that's interesting.

The aeroplane that my uncle and his pilot were flying managed to land west of lines, I don't know how the information that van der Osten was involved in this particular engagement came about but it was from a reliable aviation historian.

Regards

Alex.

  • 1 month later...

Van der Osten is posing like he's a member of a WW1-rockband.
