Mat McLachlan Posted 7 October , 2012 Share Posted 7 October , 2012 Hi all, Another request for information about a UK soldier. The family has already done some good research, but anything else you could add would be most appreciated. This is straight from the family: Tom Taylor (no middle name) His service number is 19464. Enlisted 9 Sep 1914 and discharged 15 May 1918 (due to wounds) and appeared to have been in 3rd Battalion Kings Liverpool Regiment on discharge – details below; 3rd (Reserve) Battalion – Depot also listed on SWB List August 1914 : in Seaforth, Liverpool. A training unit, it remained in UK throughout the war. Moved to Hightown in August 1914, went on to Pembroke Dock in 1915 and Cork in 1917. I have attached a Medal Index Card and SWB Roll. As you can see on the MIC he arrived in France on 26 Sep 1915. The closest battalion by date was the 13th (Service) Battalion as detailed below. He may well have been in a forward party and arrived the day before or disembarked a day earlier as the others may have stayed on board until next day which did happen. 13th (Service) Battalion Formed at Seaforth in September 1914 as part of K3 and attached as Army Troops to 25th Division. February 1915 : transferred to 76th Brigade in same Division. 27 September 1915 : landed at Le Havre. 15 October 1915 : transferred with Brigade to 3rd Division. 23 October 1915 : transferred to 8th Brigade in same Division. 4 April 1916 : transferred to 9th Brigade in same Division. More Info: Tom Taylor When he was being christened the priest called him Thomas, but his father said “Tom, he will be called, so Tom he will be named.” Date of Birth 10th June, 1893 Father John Taylor, grocer. Mother Alice Rosina Taylor. Grandad used to tell a story that his mother didn’t like to wash socks, so they had to wash their socks, but she supervised and she made sure they were clean and then they had to rinse them until all the soap was out of them. Grandad was not impressed Date of Death 23rd June 1979. aged 86 Grandad had a brother called Sidney. Army form B2067 Serial No L4058 Character Certificate or No 19464 Rank Private Name Tom Taylor Liverpool Regiment Born in the Parish of - near the Town of Manchester in the County of Lancashire on the date 10.6 1894 Discharged on 15th May 1918 after serving for 3 259/365years Entitled to wear the gold stripe Being no longer physically fit for war service. Trade as stated by him on enlistment Electrician The date of birth on his discharge papers is different from the one on his certificate of registry of birth so I would take it that that 1893 was the correct year. That is all the information that I have found Grandad Tom was bayoneted by a German in France through one cheek and out the other. Went on to fight. He lost an arm in 1918? And was medically discharged? Thanks in advance. Mat
