2nd Lieutenant Richard Bird Cheverton was promoted from the ranks, originally serving with the Hampshire Yeomanry. In late June 1918 he joined the 12th Battalion, Tank Corps.

On the 8th October 1918 he was wounded in action at Rumilly, Cambrai according to his service record. He was treated at 8th Field Ambulance, 29 CCS and 20th General Hospital before being evacuated to the UK where he remained until discharge.

Although I have his service record (WO 339/117598) and the 12th Battalion diary/history (WO 95/100), I cannot find any mention of him other than from the Landships site that on 21st August he was in "C" Company, 10 Section commanding L45 "Lodestar".

Can any of the Tank Corps experts help please, especially with the day he was wounded?

Thanks in advance,

Phil

Well, we know from 12th Battalion's Operational Order No. 1 (which is in the Tank Museum Archive) that in August 1918 Cheverton's tank, L45 Lodestar, was serial 8030, a Mark IV Male. Then we know from WO95/97 at The National Archives, Kew that a male tank, L45, rallied after action on 8 October 1918. However its commander at that date was a 2/Lt Clark. So Cheverton may have been fighting in a different tank by that date or he may have already been wounded and left his unit. Not much help I'm sorry.

Thanks Gwyn,

I had a feeling there wouldn't be more. I did try to narrow it down myself a little while ago.

I do have his file, so if you want anything from it yourself, just let me know.
