judecowie@mac.com Posted 10 October , 2012 Author Share Posted 10 October , 2012 Thanks again guys Learnt a lot over the past days - all from one entry on a War Memorial - I must admit I thought all those listed died - but now I am not so sure - I have come across Memorials before such as Yarborough where those who served are listed alongdside those who died - I reckon another trip to the church is called for .............but I am now confident, thanks to you guys, that our man was a Saddler. Much appreciated John
Kitty55 Posted 21 May , 2014 Share Posted 21 May , 2014 Def. saddler - we in Dereham have several who joined various branches of the forces. Probably due to the fact that Dereham is in the centre of Norfolk and at the beginning of the war had 3 saddler's shops and 3 wagon building firms. People who were saddlers by trade often joined the Norfolk Yeomanry etc. and from what I've found out so far had various ranks with only one of them in town getting as high as Saddler Sergeant - Murrell, by name - locally know as the hangman - but that's a different story and nothing to do with the war. I've also found that not all people on war memorials are correctly there and several are missing - it's just a fact of life I'm afraid sometimes people rush things trying to get them finished - glad to see someone else is like me - investigating things from the beginning again - it's amazing how much more you can find out nowadays compared with only ten years ago. Keep up the good work thanks and take care, Kitty
SJW Posted 22 May , 2014 Share Posted 22 May , 2014 On the photo, the prefix DRR. before H.Baxter is interesting as well. I'm assuming that isn't an abbreviation for doctor? What could that be?
Ron Clifton Posted 22 May , 2014 Share Posted 22 May , 2014 Driver. Another example of a local memorial using a non-standard abbreviation. Ron
