Kevin Mears Posted 6 October , 2012 Share Posted 6 October , 2012 Gertrude Bytheway was a Nurse with the VAD who died, aged 37, on the 31st December 1917. She is commemorated on the Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery. I believe the cause of death was drowning but does anyone know the actual circumstances of her death? As always, any information would be most appreciated. Regards, Kevin Mears
Sue Light Posted 6 October , 2012 Share Posted 6 October , 2012 Kevin She was a casualty of the 'Osmanieh' which was mined on 31/12/17. She has mentions in several threads on the Forum, but this one has links to others: Sue
Sandie Hayes Posted 6 October , 2012 Share Posted 6 October , 2012 In the 1911 census she was an Elementary Teacher for the 'Boro' Council' as was her sister, Effie. They were both living with their Uncle, William Grant, at 22 Foden Road, Walsall. In the 1891 census she was living with her parents, George (an accountant) and Charlotte. There was another sister, Dorothy, between Effie and Gertrude. The family lived at 31 Lyewaye Street, Walsall. She was aboard a ship which was torpedoed when she drowned. The ship was the Osmanieh. See this previous thread:
