German soldier

I am not sure I have posted this in the right place, my apologies if I havn't but hopefully somebody may tell me what section it should be under if it's not.

My Wife's Great Grandfather (August Schriever 1883-1963) was from a small town called Kalkar in NW Germany, Westphalen state I believe. He married there and at some point moved to Isselburg, perhaps prior to the Gt War!

I have been trying to locate something of his war record or at least the regiment he was in. I have written to the Bundersarchive but they failed to locate him in their surviving records the majority being destroyed in the second war.

Does anybody know anyway of searching further? There were several Westphalen infantry regiments but he could have been Artillery or any unit for that matter.

The only clue we have is that his daughter told me that he was at the Somme and we have a trench art candlestick, among many other items he made, which he inscribed "Frankriech 1916" with oak leaves engraved around the base. The shell casing is 25mm in diameter.

I think I have exhausted internet searches and I have Jack Sheldons book on the German army on the Somme.

I think my only hope is the local papers of the time in the town to see if he is listed serving unless anybody else can think of another option.

Look forward to your suggestions.

Hi Gryff,

Indeed, you don't have much to go on. Do you have any other things connected to this man, i.e., photos, documents? Do you know if he was ever wounded? If not, then all we have to work with is the casing. Can you photograph the stamps/marks on the base of the casing and post it here? It may have no connection to him, or it may give an additonal clue. Men who survived the war are often considerably harder to research than those who died, unless they were wounded at some point and might show up on a Verlustliste. I'll check those I have access to anyway, just to see if anything turns up.

Well, there was one hit on the still incomplete Verlustliste database:

Schriever August Nahmer, Iserlohn 8787 688 1915-09-16

2012-09-27

Not your man, as this fellow was KIA.

On to the next database...
