Medal role cards

I'm trying to find out info on a WW1 relative and have just spent 2 hours trawling through Ancestry trying to locate anything. I have his Regiment Wiltshire Regiment, 6th Battalion. Hi signed up in Sep 1914 and his Role number was 11283. They actually have his name wrong, it should be Cavalo but he is listed as Cavals (his medals have been overstamped to correct this)

I found his medal record card but can't find out anything more. Anyone want to help? Please?

Nick

He was sent to France on 19 July 1915 - the 6th battalion were sent to France in July 1915 so he likely went across with the battalion.

He only served oversea with the Wiltshire's.

He was discharged to the Class Z reserve at the end of the war.

At look at similar numbered men suggests he enlisted during the 2nd week in September 1914.

Thanks for that, I didn't know about the CZ - I've, since your reply, discovered the meaning of the Class Z on the LLT website. I 'know' he was a prisoner of war in the coal mines of Silesia (he was a messanger on the front line and apparently, as the story goes, managed to end up behind enemy lines and was captured). I've tried in vain to find his service record on Ancestry. There are records for names begining CAV (you select the letter of surname then the following letter up to 3 first of the surname) but there are over 8000 pages and they don't appear to be strictly alphabetical. I did the first 1000 pages but ran out of time. Is there a more concise way to search for his records knowing his service number, regiment, name etc or is it just a question of ploughing through all the 'CAV' records?

Thanks again

Nick

I just tried a search on Ancestry using "Charles" and "Caval*" and then "C" and "Caval*" - it brought up your man's medal card and several other hits, none of which appear to be him. There was a medal card for an Edward V Cavallo 23733 Royal Engineers - Possible connection? I suspect that his records have not survived the 1940 Blitz.

Thanks Dave for your efforts. I couldn't track anything down other than the medal card but assumed it might be my searching tecnique! I'll look into the Cavallo chap, not sure if it is connected but could well be. Thanks again
