Moriaty Posted 3 October , 2012 Share Posted 3 October , 2012 A bit of a newby question and it may well have been answered previously, but why are some of the headstones in the St Sever Cemetery Extension touching the next headstone whilst other headstones have the usual space between the headstones? 303man Posted 3 October , 2012 Share Posted 3 October , 2012 Continious pit is usually the answer as the soldiers died in hospital they were buried and the pit backfilled bodies laid touching each other, The headstones will in most cases run in date of death order. eveanne Posted 3 October , 2012 Share Posted 3 October , 2012 The first neck-to-neck headstones I'd come across was at Godeswaersvelde British Cemetery, France.
